What eatlocal is
eatlocal is an editorial guide to places to eat in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense and Aalborg. We write about restaurants, bakeries and coffee bars, brunch, wine bars, bars, nightlife and street food — the places you can use in an ordinary week.
The guide is independent. Nobody pays to be included, and nobody pays to rank higher on a list. There are no advertisements and no affiliate links on these pages.
How we choose the places
We look for craft: whether the kitchen makes things itself, whether the produce is good enough to carry the dish, and whether the place does one thing properly rather than ten things halfway. Price is not part of the judgement — a bakery costing twenty kroner can score higher than a restaurant costing a thousand.
Restaurants with a Michelin star are left out. Not because they are not good, but because they solve a different problem: they have to be booked months ahead and cost accordingly. This guide is about places you can get a table at on a Tuesday.
Chains appear once per city. If a place has three branches in Copenhagen, we pick the one worth going to and mention the others in the text. When a place closes it is removed, and its old address redirects to something that makes sense.
The score from 1 to 10
Every place gets one score, and it is our own. It weighs the kitchen, the produce and the craft — not how pretty the room is, and not how many stars guests have given elsewhere.
Guest ratings from external sources appear on the individual place, where they belong, but they do not feed into the order of the lists. Two kinds of judgement mixed together amount to no judgement at all.
Where the information comes from
Addresses, coordinates and opening hours come from OpenStreetMap and are corrected against each place's own website where the two disagree. The venue's own page always wins.
Opening hours change more often than any guide can follow. If the door says something different from this page, the door is right — and we will fix it.
Map data is from OpenStreetMap and CARTO.
About the images
The images on the place pages are made with generative AI. They show the kind of food and the kind of rooms these places are known for, but they are not photographs of the venue and should not be read as documentation.
We do it because a real press photograph belongs to the venue or the photographer, and because we would rather show something close to reality than nothing at all. Where we use freely licensed photographs from Wikimedia Commons, the photographer and the licence are named beside the image.
Errors and corrections
The guide is reviewed continuously: closed places are removed, moved addresses corrected, and opening hours checked against the venues' own pages. If you find something that does not match, we would like to hear about it.
