The 51 best places to eat in Odense
Odense has spent ten years pulling up its motorway and rebuilding a city in its place, and you can taste it. There is smørrebrød in Renaissance courtyards, a food market in an old warehouse and a run of coffee bars and wine bars found nowhere else in the country.

How to eat in Odense
Odense has 51 places to eat on this page, and it is the only one of the four cities where bakeries are the largest category: 19 bakeries and coffee bars against 17 restaurants. The rest are 9 bars, 6 brunch rooms, 7 wine bars, 6 late-night places and a single street food address. Several count twice, because they are a café by day and a bar in the evening.
The city is small enough to walk. 13 of the 51 sit in Indre By, the old centre, four on Vestergade, and three each in Brandts and Vindegade — the rest are spread across the harbour and out into the residential districts, which is where the bakeries are. What lies outside the centre lies only just outside: the harbour is a quarter of an hour on foot, and the warehouse behind the station is ten minutes.
If you are looking for one particular kind, the category pages carry the full list with a map, filters and an open-now badge — restaurants, bakeries, brunch, wine bars, bars and nightlife each on their own. If you want the list ranked rather than filtered, the ranking is in the guides: the city's best brunch and the city's best cafés each have a page.
Two numbers are worth knowing. Sunday is the weakest day by a wide margin — 28 of the 51 places open, against 51 on a Friday, when every single one is serving — and Monday is 33. The price level is low: 27 of the 51 sit on the second-cheapest tier and 11 on the cheapest, and only three addresses are at the expensive end. First to open is the bakery at six in the morning; last to close is the bar at four.
