Aalborg is a small coffee city with a precise middle: six of the eight are within a few minutes' walk of each other in the centre, and the last two are in Vestbyen. That makes the city easy to walk through in a morning — and it makes the closing days the thing to keep track of.

The order follows our editorial score, which weighs the craft and the produce. That means a sourdough bakery comes first, even though the list is about coffee bars: Bread by Kærup bakes best of the eight. If you are asking for the best coffee bar in the narrow sense, the answer is Behag Din Smag on Slotsgade — it is the one locals point to, and it has the widest coffee range.

Each entry gives the address and the opening hours, and at the bottom there are answers to the questions that keep coming up: who is open on Sunday, who opens earliest, and where you can sit in the evening.

1. Bread by Kærup, Vestbyen

Kastetvej 15A. A sourdough bakery run by William Kærup with the weight on the produce, and the highest score on the list. It is a small place, and the best goes early — come in the morning.

Open Tuesday to Friday from half past seven to four and at the weekend from eight to three. Closed Monday. The hours here are an estimate, because the house has no website that publishes them; call if you are travelling far.

2. Penny Lane, Kjellerupsgade

Kjellerupsgade 1A. The city's most legendary café, known for the cakes and for an interior assembled over time rather than bought in one go. It is the one of the eight that most feels like somewhere you stay.

Open until eight in the evening on weekdays — the longest of the eight if you set aside Cafe Vesterå's late licence. The weekend ends at five.

3. Behag Din Smag, Slotsgade

Slotsgade 16A. The city's best coffee bar if you ask the people of Aalborg themselves: a wide coffee range, hot Valrhona chocolate, and freshly baked bread, cake and tart beside it.

It opens at 7.15 — earliest of all eight — which is why it works before work. In return it is closed both Monday and Sunday, the shortest week on the list at five days. Tuesday to Friday until five, Saturday half past eight to four.

4. Surdejsbageren, Budolfi Plads

Budolfi Plads 16. Sourdough bread with coffee beside it, in the middle of the pedestrian street and with seats facing it. It is the most central address on the list, and it is hard to walk past.

Open all seven days — half past seven to five on weekdays, half past seven to four Saturday, eight to four Sunday. One of only four places on the list open the whole week.

5. KAFFeFAIR, Vestbyen

Strandvejen 19. An organic coffee bar in Vestbyen — the only place on the list that is organic the whole way through. It is a neighbourhood coffee bar rather than a destination, and it is better for it.

Open nine to five on weekdays and ten to three on Saturday. Closed Sunday, and the house says itself that this is deliberate.

6. Kaffebaren Bredegade, Bredegade

Bredegade 6. A coffee bar in a quiet side street with sunny seats outside and the longest fixed hours among the daytime places: nine to six Monday to Thursday, Friday all the way to half past seven in the evening, and nine to five at the weekend.

Open all seven days. It is the one to choose if the coffee has to be late in the afternoon without becoming a bar.

7. Arnessted, Gravensgade

Gravensgade 21. A coffee house and bakery in one, with the bread baked in house. Open all seven days — eight to six on weekdays, half past eight to six Saturday and nine to five Sunday.

Gravensgade is a few minutes from Budolfi Plads. Arnessted is the only one of the eight that both bakes its own and is open all seven days.

8. Cafe Vesterå, Vesterå

Vesterå 4. A café by day and a cocktail bar by night, tucked into a side street off Bispensgade. It is the only place on the list where the coffee can turn into a drink without changing address — open until midnight Tuesday to Thursday and until four in the morning on Friday and Saturday nights, the latest on the list by several hours.

Sunday is shorter: eleven to six. Closed Monday. The kitchen closes at 21.00, so if you are eating rather than drinking, that is the time that counts. The address and both times were confirmed against the house's own site on 10 October 2026 — we had Vesterå 5 and two in the morning until then. The day-by-day split is still an estimate, because the house only states "11.00 and late".

The closing days are what to keep track of

It is the biggest practical difference between the eight, and it is worth reading through before you go.

Four are open all seven days: Penny Lane, Surdejsbageren, Kaffebaren Bredegade and Arnessted. Those four are the safe choices on a Sunday.

Two are closed on Sunday: Behag Din Smag and KAFFeFAIR. KAFFeFAIR says itself that it is a choice.

Three are closed on Monday: Bread by Kærup, Behag Din Smag and Cafe Vesterå. Behag Din Smag is therefore the only one closed on both days — five open days a week, the shortest on the list.

Early and late

Behag Din Smag opens at 7.15 and is the earliest of the eight. Then come Bread by Kærup and Surdejsbageren at half past seven, and Penny Lane and Arnessted at eight. KAFFeFAIR and Kaffebaren Bredegade open at nine, and Cafe Vesterå not until ten — it is not a morning place.

At the other end: Cafe Vesterå is open until two in the morning on Friday and Saturday, which is a category of its own. Among the daytime places, Penny Lane closes latest at eight on weekdays, then Kaffebaren Bredegade at half past seven on Fridays.

The other five close between three and six, so a coffee after six is a question of three addresses, not eight.

Where you can sit outside

Seven of the eight have outdoor seating — all except Bread by Kærup, which is too small for it. The best seats are Kaffebaren Bredegade's, because the street is quiet and faces the sun, and Surdejsbageren's out towards the pedestrian street on Budolfi Plads if you would rather watch people.

All eight sit at price level 2, ordinary coffee-bar prices. There is nobody at either the cheap or the expensive end — a more uniform list than Copenhagen, where the range runs from level 1 to level 3.

The neighbourhoods

The eight sit in seven neighbourhoods, and only Vestbyen has two: Bread by Kærup on Kastetvej and KAFFeFAIR on Strandvejen. The rest have one each — Kjellerupsgade (Penny Lane), Slotsgade (Behag Din Smag), Budolfi Plads (Surdejsbageren), Bredegade (Kaffebaren), Gravensgade (Arnessted) and Vesterå (Cafe Vesterå).

Six of the seven are within a few minutes' walk of each other in the centre. Vestbyen is the only real detour, and it is worth taking: two of the eight are there, and they are each other's opposites — a sourdough bakery and an organic coffee bar.

Why coffee bars and brunch are kept apart

The city also has a brunch guide, and the two pages share no addresses. That is deliberate.

  • This page promises the cup. The order follows the coffee and the craft, and these are the places you walk to for a cup and perhaps something with it.
  • Best brunch in Aalborg promises a meal you sit down to: Caféministeriet, Peace, Det Tredje Sted and the other four. None of them is here.

To see them all on a map with distance and open-now, bakeries and coffee bars in Aalborg are on the list page.

Questions and answers

Which coffee bar in Aalborg is the best?

Behag Din Smag at Slotsgade 16A, if you are asking for a coffee bar in the narrow sense — a wide coffee range, hot Valrhona chocolate and freshly baked things beside it. Bread by Kærup on Kastetvej holds the highest score on the list, but it is first and foremost a sourdough bakery. Note that Behag Din Smag is closed Monday and Sunday.

Where is anything open on a Sunday?

Four of the eight: Penny Lane, Surdejsbageren, Kaffebaren Bredegade and Arnessted. Behag Din Smag and KAFFeFAIR are closed, and Cafe Vesterå is open but only eleven to six. Bread by Kærup is open on Sunday but closed on Monday.

What opens earliest in Aalborg?

Behag Din Smag at 7.15, the earliest of the eight. Bread by Kærup and Surdejsbageren follow at half past seven, Penny Lane and Arnessted at eight. If it has to be earlier still, it is the bakeries rather than the coffee bars — Othello Bageriet on Christiansgade opens at half past five.

Where can you sit in the evening?

Cafe Vesterå at Vesterå 4 is the only real option: a café by day, a cocktail bar by night, open until two in the morning on Friday and Saturday. Penny Lane is open until eight on weekdays, and Kaffebaren Bredegade until half past seven on Fridays. The rest close between three and six.

Is there an organic coffee bar in Aalborg?

KAFFeFAIR at Strandvejen 19 in Vestbyen is the only one on the list that is organic the whole way through. It is closed on Sundays, and the house says itself that this is a deliberate choice.

What does the coffee cost?

All eight sit at price level 2 of 4 — ordinary coffee-bar prices. It is a more uniform list than Copenhagen, which has both a place at level 1 and one at level 3. The actual prices are on the venues' own pages and change, so we do not reproduce them here.

How many coffee bars are there in Aalborg?

Eight in this guide, and those are the ones we have been through. The city has eighteen bakeries and coffee bars in the dataset in total — the rest are bakeries, ice cream kiosks and chocolate houses, which belong on the list page rather than in a coffee ranking.

The order follows our editorial score, which weighs the coffee, the craft and the produce. Guest ratings from external sources appear on each place's own page and play no part in the ranking.

Addresses and coordinates come from OpenStreetMap. Opening hours come from the places themselves and are written out as they stood on 8 October 2026. For Bread by Kærup and Cafe Vesterå the hours are an estimate — Bread by Kærup has no website that publishes them. Holidays change the hours; check the individual page before you set off.

There are no paid placements in this guide, and none of the places knew they were being assessed.
