About bakeries in Aalborg

A Danish bakery is two different businesses under one word. One opens before six in the morning and sells rundstykker, the round breakfast rolls, to people on their way to work. The other opens at eight or nine, brews coffee and bakes in smaller batches. Aalborg has plenty of both, and they rarely share a street.

Othello Bageriet on Christiansgade is the earliest address in the city — half past five, every single day, with classic Danish baking and special cakes to order. Den Gyldne Kringle on Thistedvej in Nørresundby, across the fjord, opens at the same hour on weekdays and makes the layer cakes that have to be ordered well in advance. Bauns Bageri on Vestre Alle in Kærby opens at six Tuesday to Sunday, bakes everything from scratch and sells rolls at eight kroner; it is closed on Mondays.

Sourdough has two homes. Bread by Kærup on Kastetvej in Vestbyen bakes in small batches, and the best of it is usually gone before midday — come in the morning. Surdejsbageren on Budolfi Plads is the opposite model: open all seven days in the middle of the pedestrian streets, with seats out in the street.

The coffee bars are the largest group. Behag Din Smag on Slotsgade opens at half past seven on weekdays and pours coffee, tea and hot chocolate, KAFFeFAIR on Strandvejen is organic throughout and closed on Sunday, and Arnessted on Gravensgade is a coffee house and a bakery in the same room all seven days. Penny Lane on Kjellerupsgade is the city's café reference and stays open until eight on weekdays. Then the sweet without the bread: Spangsberg in Aalborg SV makes its own chocolate, and IsVærftet on Stjernepladsen churns ice cream in small batches.
