Åboulevarden is where every visitor to Aarhus gets sent, and it is also the stretch locals feel most conflicted about. The river was uncovered again in the 1990s, the facades grew terraces over the water, and today it is the city's most photographed address. But count the doors and Åboulevarden is a shorter story than its reputation suggests: four of our 54 Aarhus venues are on the street itself. The other 22 in this guide are in the streets around it — Klostergade, Vestergade, Skolegade, Mejlgade and the squares in between — all within a five-minute walk of the water.
That matters for planning. Three of the four places on Åboulevarden are closed on Sundays, and only one of them opens before three in the afternoon. The riverbank is an evening address. For lunch or coffee by the water, you need the side streets.
The four on Åboulevarden itself
1. Pondus — Åboulevarden 51
The best address on the street and one of the best in the city. Pondus serves natural wine and small, precise dishes from a blackboard that changes, and it holds a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin guide — the recognition for good food at a sensible price, not a star. The wine list is long by the glass, so you can work through it without committing to a bottle.
Open Monday to Saturday, 5pm to 11pm. Closed Sundays.
2. Herr Bartels — Åboulevarden 46D
A cocktail bar facing the water, with the most restricted hours in this guide: Thursday, Friday and Saturday only. Thursday 7pm to midnight, Friday and Saturday 6pm to midnight. There are few seats and they go early, so this is not somewhere to turn up at eleven and expect to get in.
3. Grappa — Åboulevarden 60
Italian cooking — pasta, pizza and wine — and the only place on Åboulevarden open all seven days. It is also the only one that opens in the morning: from 10am every day, until midnight Monday to Thursday and at the weekend, until 1am on Fridays. The seats facing the river are the reason to come.
If you want to meet by the water at any hour that isn't the evening, this is in practice where you do it.
4. Den Gyldne Kro — Åboulevarden 15A
The late bar at the other end. Monday and Tuesday 5pm to 2am, Wednesday and Thursday 5pm to 5am, Friday and Saturday 3pm to 5am. Closed Sunday. There are seats out by the water, and this is the one of the four you end on, not the one you start on.
The quarter around the river
The other 22 are in the streets running down to the water. Hours are wider here, prices lower and the range larger.
Coffee and baking
La Cabra, Graven 20, is the city's coffee flagship and the highest-rated venue in this guide. Open Monday to Saturday 8am to 6pm, Sunday 9am to 5pm. Mor Anna, Mejlgade 5, opens at 7am on weekdays — earliest in the quarter. Emmerys at Klostergade 22 also opens at 7am and is open all seven days. Sigfreds Kaffebar, Klostergade 32, and Moccacity, Gammel Munkegade 19B, are the two cheapest coffee addresses. For Emma, Vestergade 15, is open Wednesday to Friday only — and closes for good on 30 October 2026.
Dinner
Restaurant Komfur, Guldsmedgade 40, is open all seven days from 5pm to midnight — unusual in a city where most kitchens take at least one day off. L'Estragon, Klostergade 6B, Tuesday to Sunday from 6pm. Restaurant ET, Mindegade 8, is the only place in the quarter with a proper lunch service: from noon Wednesday to Saturday, and dinner from 5.30pm Monday to Saturday. Pinden, Skolegade 29, serves Danish food from noon to 11pm, Tuesday to Saturday. Gaijin Ramen, Nørregade 16, Tuesday to Sunday, noon to 9pm. Teater Bodega, Skolegade 7, is open all seven days from 11.30am.
Wine
S'vinbar, Klostergade 62, Monday to Thursday 3pm to 11pm, Friday and Saturday 1pm to 1am. Løve's Bog og VinCafé, Nørregade 32, is a bookshop and a wine bar in the same room, Tuesday to Saturday. Mleko Bar, Vester Allé 18, is open Wednesday to Saturday in the evening and from noon on Saturday.
Market hall
Banken Food Hall, Kannikegade 4, in the old bank building: all seven days from 11am, until midnight Friday and Saturday.
Late
This is where the quarter differs from the rest of Aarhus. Vinstuen, Fiskergyde 15, has the longest hours in the city: 11am to 5am Monday to Thursday, and to 6am on Friday and Saturday. That is nineteen hours in a row, and it is also one of the three cheapest places in this guide.
Sway, Sankt Clemens Torv 17, plays rock, indie and punk until 5am Thursday to Saturday. Kurts Mor, Fredens Torv 7, is furnished entirely from flea markets and closes at 3am at the weekend. Erlings Jazz- & Ølbar, Nørreport 8, has fourteen craft beers on tap and live jazz most Saturdays. Café Smagløs on Klostertorvet 7 runs from morning coffee to evening beer without changing gear, and is open all seven days.
What the numbers say
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Venues on Åboulevarden itself | 4 |
| Venues in the surrounding quarter | 22 |
| Closed on Sundays | 12 of 26 |
| Closed on Mondays | 7 of 26 |
| Price level 4 | 0 |
| Open past 2am | 6 |
There is no expensive restaurant in this quarter. None of the 26 sits at our top price level, and nor does anything else in our Aarhus data. The five priciest — Pondus, Herr Bartels, Komfur, L'Estragon and Restaurant ET — are all at level 3.
Sunday is the difficult day. Twelve of twenty-six are closed, and on Åboulevarden itself it is three out of four. If Sunday is all you have, Grappa, La Cabra, Komfur, Gaijin Ramen, Banken Food Hall, Teater Bodega and Café Vestergade are the safe bets.
Questions and answers
How many restaurants are there on Åboulevarden?
Our data has four places on Åboulevarden itself: Pondus at number 51, Herr Bartels at 46D, Grappa at 60 and Den Gyldne Kro at 15A. The street has more businesses than that, but those are the four we cover. Another 22 sit within a five-minute walk.
What is the best place on Åboulevarden?
Pondus at number 51. It has our highest score on the stretch and is the only one of the four with a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin guide. Expect natural wine and small plates rather than a classic main course.
Can you eat by the river on a Sunday?
Only one of the four places on Åboulevarden is open on Sundays: Grappa at number 60, from 10am. Pondus, Herr Bartels and Den Gyldne Kro are all closed. The side streets have more — La Cabra on Graven, Komfur on Guldsmedgade, Gaijin Ramen on Nørregade and Banken Food Hall on Kannikegade are all open.
Where can you get breakfast or coffee near the river?
Not on Åboulevarden itself, apart from Grappa, which opens at 10am. For coffee earlier than that, go up into the side streets: Mor Anna at Mejlgade 5 and Emmerys at Klostergade 22 both open at 7am on weekdays, and La Cabra at Graven 20 opens at 8am.
How late do bars stay open in central Aarhus?
Longest of all is Vinstuen at Fiskergyde 15, open until 5am Monday to Thursday and until 6am Friday and Saturday. Den Gyldne Kro on Åboulevarden and Sway on Sankt Clemens Torv both close at 5am on their late nights. Kurts Mor on Fredens Torv closes at 3am at the weekend.
Is Åboulevarden expensive?
Not by our price levels. None of the 26 places in this guide is at the highest level, and the three cheapest — Vinstuen, Sway and Sigfreds Kaffebar — are all in the quarter around the river. The more expensive addresses are the dinner restaurants, not the bars.
Is there outdoor seating by the water?
Pondus, Grappa and Den Gyldne Kro all have outdoor seating facing the river. So do Kurts Mor on Fredens Torv, Erlings on Nørreport and Café Smagløs on Klostertorvet, but without a view of the water.
How this guide was made
Every address, opening time and price level comes from our own dataset of places to eat in Aarhus, which is built on the venues' own information. The counts in this guide — four on the street, 26 in the quarter, twelve closed on Sundays — were counted in the dataset on 26 September 2026, not estimated.
The boundary is our own: "the quarter around the river" means the streets running down to Åboulevarden between Vester Allé and the harbour, and that is an editorial decision, not an official district line. Michelin-starred restaurants are not included; Bib Gourmand is, and Pondus is the only place here that holds one.
Opening hours change. Check the venue's own site before you go, and write to us if anything here is wrong.
If you would rather eat south of the station, the largest neighbourhood in our Aarhus guide has its own page: Jægergårdsgade and Frederiksbjerg.
