A julefrokost is the Danish Christmas lunch, and if you are new to the country it helps to know three things about it before you try to book one in Aarhus. It is usually eaten during the day. It runs on herring, aquavit, roast pork and several hours. And it is booked absurdly early — companies start in September and take the November Saturdays first, because December is gone before most private parties have thought about it.
Aarhus is small enough that the twenty or thirty addresses able to seat a party of twelve are the same ones everyone else is calling. What the city has instead is three genuinely different versions of the day, all within half an hour of each other. There is Skolegade, where the old lunch restaurants have stood since long before anyone called it retro. There is the drive or walk out into the Marselisborg woods, where the meal is as much an excursion. And there is the harbour and the river, where the function rooms have a view. Choose the format first and the address second; that is the order that gets you a table.
Sixteen places follow, grouped by the kind of day you want. Six of them have their own 2026 Christmas card out, and that is stated explicitly in each entry. The other ten are our own recommendations for where we would gather a party in December, based on what the kitchen does the rest of the year — not a claim that they serve a Christmas menu. Call and ask before you count on anything.
The classic Danish version
Pinden, Skolegade 29. The city's classic lunch restaurant serves its own version of the traditional Danish Christmas lunch, and the Christmas platters are on the card through November and December. They have to be ordered when you book the table. The rest of the year Pinden is the place where herring, the shooting-star plate and the aquavit have never been redesigned, and the room looks the way it has looked for a long time. Open Tuesday to Saturday from noon until eleven, so a lunch here can run straight into the evening. Price level is mid-range.
Teater Bodega, Skolegade 7. This is where we would hold it if the party is mixed and nobody should feel wrongly dressed. The bodega has sat beside Aarhus Theatre since the 1950s, the actors' portraits are still on the walls, and the kitchen does Danish lunch food all year. There is no verified Christmas card here, but the room is exactly what people picture when they say julefrokost. Open from half past eleven every day, until midnight Thursday to Saturday — and the bar closes after the kitchen, which answers the question of what to do afterwards.
Thors Mølle, Thorsmøllevej 15. A Christmas lunch inside the Marselisborg woods. The journey is the point: you arrive on foot or by car through the forest and sit in an old water mill from another age. Watch the opening hours, because they govern everything — Thursday to Sunday only, noon until four. That makes this a daytime event that ends while it is still light. In return, it is the only address in the city where the walk home goes through a wood.
Europa Mad & Vinbar, Havnegade 28. For the small party that really just wants open sandwiches and a glass matched to each one. The house serves smørrebrød with wine chosen to go with it, the list is short, and there are few tables — which is why this is a recommendation for six people and not for sixteen. Open Tuesday to Saturday from midday. No Christmas card, but December is the month when this kind of cooking makes the most sense.
For the company party
NorR, Marselisborg Havnevej 46D. The harbour restaurant takes Christmas lunch bookings in its function rooms, and the view over the water comes with it. The kitchen is Nordic and runs in the same key all day, from half past eleven until eleven, every day of the week — which is the flexibility you need when half the department arrives straight from the office and the other half from Marselisborg. It is also one of the few places where a company party is not relegated to a basement.
Restaurant Komfur, Guldsmedgade 40. The French address on Guldsmedgade keeps the Christmas lunch as a separate card alongside the ordinary one, and the kitchen runs until midnight — later than most in the city. Open all seven days from five. That makes Komfur the answer if the julefrokost has to be an evening rather than a daytime affair, and if somebody in the party wants a main course at ten.
Sct. Pauls Apotek, Jægergårdsgade 76. A Christmas menu in the old pharmacy, with the medicine cabinets still in place. The cocktail bar is part of the house, so the evening can continue without anyone moving — worth knowing when you are booking for twenty people who do not agree on when to go home. Open Tuesday to Saturday from half past five, until two on Friday and Saturday. Closed Sunday and Monday.
Banken Food Hall, Kannikegade 4. This is where we would put the Christmas lunch nobody can agree on. The food hall sits in an old bank building in the middle of town, the stalls cover a wide range, and you do not need to book. Open until eleven every day, midnight on Friday and Saturday. It is not a julefrokost in the traditional sense — no Christmas platter, no shared menu — but for a group of fifteen with three vegetarians and one who does not eat fish, it is far less stressful than a fixed menu.
Aarhus Street Food, Ny Banegårdsgade 46. Same principle, bigger scale: around thirty stalls under a roof, five minutes' walk from the central station, open every day from half past eleven until nine. This is the address you use when the party arrives by train from Randers and Silkeborg and has to get home again. It stays open all winter, and nobody needs a table.
Christmas lunch without the herring
Grappa, Åboulevarden 60. An Italian Christmas menu for 2026 — for anyone who would rather hold the julefrokost without herring and roast pork. Grappa sits down on the river and is open from ten in the morning until midnight, and until one on Friday, so a party can start early and still stay put. It is the most straightforward way out of the Danish Christmas without having to explain yourself to your colleagues.
Mleko Bar, Vester Allé 18. Here is where we would hold it if the group is small and curious. The kitchen is Polish, with pierogi and fermentation at the centre and a wine list chosen for the food — and Polish winter cooking sits closer to the Danish Christmas than people expect, without being it. Open from eleven Monday to Saturday, until midnight Friday and Saturday. Closed Sunday. No Christmas card, but a good December evening.
Forlæns og Baglæns, Jægergårdsgade 23. Spanish tapas and wine from midday until late, Tuesday to Saturday, and until one on Friday and Saturday. Tapas is in practice the same principle as a julebord — many small things on the table that everyone shares — just without the herring. It works for a party of eight to twelve, and the kitchen runs long enough that nobody has to watch the clock.
L'Estragon, Klostergade 6B. The answer if most of the party are vegetarians. The kitchen is organic the whole way through and the vegetables carry the menu — not as an alternative, but as the main event. Open Tuesday to Sunday, evenings only from six. It is not a Christmas lunch, and the house does not pretend to hold one, but it is the place in Aarhus where a group without meat eaters gets the best evening in December.
Where to go afterwards
This is the part with no Christmas lunch involved, so the recommendation stands entirely free. All three are within ten minutes' walk of the centre.
Erlings Jazz- & Ølbar, Nørreport 8. Fourteen craft beers on tap, jazz from the turntable and live music most Saturdays. Open from two in the afternoon, until two on Friday and Saturday. This is the bar for the party that has finished eating but not talking.
S'vinbar, Klostergade 62. A wine bar on Klostergade, open until one on Friday and Saturday, closed Sunday. This is where you end up if the Christmas lunch was on Skolegade or in the Latin Quarter and someone suggests one more glass.
Vinstuen, Fiskergyde 15. The longest opening hours in the city — until five in the morning midweek and six on Friday and Saturday. It is a pub despite the name, and it is the last stop, not the first. If anyone in the party is still going at four, this is where they are.

Questions and answers
When should you book a Christmas lunch in Aarhus?
Now. Company Christmas lunches are booked from September, and the popular Saturdays in November and December are usually gone during October. If there are more than eight of you, early November is the last call. It matters most at the places open only some days of the week — Thors Mølle has four opening days, which halves the number of possible dates.
What does a julefrokost cost in Aarhus?
It varies, and we do not reproduce prices here, because a wrong number is worse than no number. The price level is on each place's own page as a step from 1 to 4, and the actual Christmas menu price sits with the venue. What really moves the bill is not the food but the aquavit and the beer — ask whether drinks are included before you book, and ask the price per drink if they are not.
What is the difference between a julefrokost and a julebord?
The julefrokost is the meal — usually during the day, often at the weekend. The julebord is the format: a table you walk to and from, rather than service at your seat. Several places use the words interchangeably, so ask which is meant before booking. The difference affects both the price and how long you sit.
Can you hold it on a weekday?
Often that is the only way to get a table late in December, and many places have more room and shorter waits Monday to Wednesday. Check the weekdays before you propose a date: Pinden and Forlæns og Baglæns are closed Sunday and Monday, Sct. Pauls Apotek takes Wednesday to Saturday only, Mleko Bar is closed Sunday to Tuesday, and Thors Mølle only takes Thursday to Sunday. Restaurant Komfur and NorR are the two open all seven days.
How many people can you be?
It varies from house to house, and it is the first thing to ask. NorR and Sct. Pauls Apotek both have function rooms and take groups; Europa Mad & Vinbar has few tables and suits a small party. If you are more than fifteen and the date is close, the food halls — Banken Food Hall and Aarhus Street Food — are the solution that needs no table at all.
Is there a buffet julefrokost in Aarhus?
None of the six Christmas menus is a buffet. They are served menus with a fixed spread, and that is what the houses write on their own pages. The closest the city comes is the two food halls: Banken Food Hall on Kannikegade and Aarhus Street Food on Ny Banegårdsgade, where everyone fetches their own food from the stalls. That is self-service, but it is not a Christmas spread — there is no herring, no shared platters and no menu the party has in common.
The difference matters before you book for a large group: a buffet is a standing table you get up to, while a served julefrokost is platters in sequence, paid per person however much each guest eats. If the party needs to come and go, the food halls are the answer in Aarhus — and they take no reservations. The genuine help-yourself Christmas buffet is usually found at country inns and hotels, and those are not in our dataset.
Can you eat out on Christmas Eve, 24 December, in Aarhus?
None of the six Christmas menus covers Christmas Eve. Their season ends before the holidays, and a Christmas Eve dinner is a different product from a julefrokost: a standalone menu on the day itself, often with a single seating and payment in advance, usually announced only in November.
None of the sixteen houses on this list publishes holiday hours on its own site, and the opening times we show are the ordinary weekly ones — they say nothing about the 24th. Call and ask about that day specifically. The food halls have the longest ordinary hours of them all, but a public holiday does not follow the weekly schedule there either.
Is there Christmas lunch to take away in Aarhus?
Not at the six places above. We checked their own pages in September 2026, and none of them has a Christmas lunch for collection listed. Several of the city's bakeries and cafés do takeaway all year, but that is not the same as a julebord, and we will not write that someone delivers one until we can see it on their own site. Ask in the shop, or leave it out.
What about vegetarians and people who will not eat herring?
Say so when you book, not at the table. Most kitchens can handle it with a week's notice, but not on the day, when there is a fixed menu for forty people. If you would rather avoid the question entirely, L'Estragon is built around the vegetables, Grappa cooks Italian, and the food halls let everyone choose for themselves.
All addresses and opening hours were taken from the venues' own pages and checked on 24 September 2026. The six places described here as holding a Christmas lunch — Pinden, Restaurant Komfur, Thors Mølle, NorR, Sct. Pauls Apotek and Grappa — were verified on their own sites. The rest are our recommendations based on what the kitchen does day to day, not a promise of a Christmas menu. Christmas cards and dates change quickly in October and November, so call rather than email when it comes to December.
