If you want smørrebrød in Odense, the short answer is HOS at Kongensgade 65. The longer answer depends on the day of the week, because that is what decides most here: only one of the six is open all seven days, and three of them close entirely at the weekend or for part of it. A Danish lunch restaurant is exactly that — a restaurant open while lunch is being served — and in Odense that means you need to know the day before you need the address.
The six below are the ones we have eaten at, and they sit close together: five of them have postal code 5000, which is central Odense, and only Sortebro Kro lies outside the city. Two of them are on the same street, Kongensgade, with a good three hundred house numbers between them.
Odense is strong in this category, and that is not a feeling. In our national survey of smørrebrød in Denmark, six of the eighteen addresses are on Funen — more than Copenhagen, which has five. It is the only category on this site where Odense beats the capital on numbers.
Under each place the address and the opening hours are written out. Further down you will find which days you can get smørrebrød in the city, what is open on a Sunday, and what the answer is if you are looking outside Odense. To see them on a map with open-now status, they are here: all restaurants in Odense.
The six, in brief
| Place | Neighbourhood | Price level | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| HOS | Indre By | 3 | Modern smørrebrød, fish-led |
| Oluf Bagers Gård | Indre By | 3 | Renaissance courtyard, lunch and dinner |
| Kong Volmer | Brandts | 2 | The classic lunch table |
| Restaurant Værdsat | Indre By | 2 | Lunch and nothing else |
| Sortebro Kro | Den Fynske Landsby | 3 | Inn cooking outside town |
| Mr. Torp | Vintapperstræde | 2 | Brunch, smørrebrød and tapas |
The opening hours are in the overview table further down the page, where they stay in sync with our data place by place.
1. HOS, Kongensgade
Kongensgade 65, 5000 Odense. Open Tuesday to Sunday from half past eleven until half past three, and again on Friday and Saturday from six until half past nine in the evening. Closed on Monday.
HOS makes smørrebrød rooted in the regional, with fish as the running theme. It is neither a museum nor an experiment — it is the classics made with appetite, and that is why it sits at the top with 8.7.
Lunch is the main event, but Friday and Saturday there is dinner service with a longer menu. There are vegetarian dishes, which is not a given in this category, and seats out on the pedestrian street. Kongensgade is Odense's main shopping street, so the address is easy to find.
It suits a lunch allowed to take its time, and anyone who wants to taste modern smørrebrød without driving to Copenhagen.
2. Oluf Bagers Gård, Nørregade
Nørregade 29, 5000 Odense. Lunch Monday to Saturday from twelve until five, dinner from half past five until half past nine. Closed on Sunday.
Oluf Bagers Gård is one of the oldest buildings in Odense, and the courtyard inside is the city's loveliest place to eat lunch in the sun. The kitchen sticks to smørrebrød and regional dishes without reinventing them.
The house is from the Renaissance, and the courtyard is closed off from the street, so the noise disappears. In the evening there is a longer menu of up to nine courses, and there is takeaway for anyone who wants to eat elsewhere. Of the six it is the one that keeps lunch open longest — until five.
Book for the evening; the courtyard is not large. It suits a long lunch with visitors and a dinner in surroundings the city does not have many of.
3. Kong Volmer, Brandts Passage
Brandts Passage 31, 5000 Odense. Open Monday to Friday from eleven until four, and Saturday from ten until four. Closed on Sunday.
Kong Volmer makes smørrebrød in the classic form and serves it in Brandts Passage, in the middle of the city's culture quarter. The menu is the classic one with herring, stjerneskud and roast beef, with beer and snaps alongside.
There are outdoor seats when the weather allows and takeaway when it does not. The house also has a branch in Svendborg, but the Odense address is the original.
They only stay open until four, so this is the lunch place rather than the dinner place. Come before one if you want a table.
4. Restaurant Værdsat, Kongensgade
Kongensgade 31B, 5000 Odense. Open Monday to Friday from eleven until three. Closed Saturday and Sunday.
Værdsat is a lunch restaurant in the literal sense: four hours a day, five days a week, and one thing done properly. The menu is short and the dishes are the classic ones.
Because they are only open for those four hours, everything is made for that lunch — nothing has to keep until the evening. It also has the shortest week of the six, and it is the only one closed both Saturday and Sunday.
Come before one if you want a table. It suits a lunch during working hours, and anyone who wants smørrebrød without making an occasion of it.
5. Sortebro Kro, Den Fynske Landsby
Sejerskovvej 20B, 5260 Odense. Lunch every day from twelve until four, dinner Monday to Saturday from half past five until midnight. Sunday is lunch only.
Sortebro Kro sits on the edge of Den Fynske Landsby and serves Danish food in surroundings as old as the dishes. It is not modern, and that is the whole point. The kitchen stays Danish: herring, stegt flæsk, smørrebrød and classic main courses.
The inn has both a lunch and a dinner menu, there is a taproom and private rooms, and they run a cooking school. It is the only one of the six open all seven days, and the only one with an address outside central Odense — the postal code is 5260.
Make the trip out of town and turn it into an afternoon; the open-air museum next door is part of the experience. It suits a Sunday lunch with several generations.
6. Mr. Torp, Vintapperstræde
Vintapperstræde 16, 5000 Odense. Open Tuesday to Thursday from ten until four, Friday until eight in the evening, Saturday ten until four and Sunday ten until three. Closed on Monday.
Mr. Torp is small and sits in Vintapperstræde, where there is barely room for two tables side by side. You can drop in for brunch or take lunch with smørrebrød, and there is tapas on the menu too.
Because the room is so small it is rarely filled with groups — it is mostly two at a time. Of the six it is the earliest to open, at ten — a time only Kong Volmer matches, and only on Saturdays, and the only one that is not a restaurant: it is listed as a bakery in our data.
Note that ten: if the day has to start earlier, that is a bakery, not here. It is the kind of place you only find once somebody has told you about it.
Which days can you get smørrebrød in Odense
That is the piece of information that decides most, and it is not the same for all six. Worked out from our own hours:
- All seven days: only Sortebro Kro, and that one is outside the city.
- Sunday: three of six — Sortebro Kro, HOS and Mr. Torp until three.
- Monday: four of six. HOS and Mr. Torp are closed.
- Saturday: five of six. Only Værdsat is closed.
If you want certainty whatever the day, Sortebro Kro is the only answer. If it has to be inside the city on a Sunday, it is HOS — and if you want to eat early, Mr. Torp opens at ten, an hour and a half before HOS and two hours before the inn.
Four of the six serve dinner: HOS on Friday and Saturday, Oluf Bagers Gård and Sortebro Kro Monday to Saturday, and Mr. Torp until eight on Fridays. Kong Volmer and Værdsat both close in the middle of the afternoon.
Smørrebrød on the rest of Funen
The short answer: all six are in Odense, and we have no smørrebrød address anywhere else on Funen. If you are looking in Svendborg, Nyborg, Middelfart or Faaborg, this is not where you will find one. We review the four cities we have been to, and we do not write about places we have not checked.
Kong Volmer has a branch in Svendborg, but we have not visited it, and the Odense address is the original. It therefore stands here with Brandts Passage and nothing else.
Odense is, on the other hand, the city on Funen where the choice is wide enough for a ranking — and with six of eighteen places in the national survey, it is not a small choice measured against the rest of the country.
Questions and answers
Where do you get the best smørrebrød in Odense?
HOS at Kongensgade 65, with 8.7 out of ten in our assessment. The kitchen has fish as its running theme and makes the classics modern without remaking them. Open Tuesday to Sunday from half past eleven until half past three. Closed on Monday.
What is a lunch restaurant, and which is the pure version in Odense?
A Danish lunch restaurant is open while lunch is being served, and then closes. The purest version in Odense is Restaurant Værdsat at Kongensgade 31B: eleven to three on weekdays, closed at the weekend, and no dinner menu at all. Four hours a day, five days a week.
Where can you get smørrebrød in Odense on a Sunday?
Three of the six. Sortebro Kro serves lunch from twelve until four, HOS from half past eleven until half past three, and Mr. Torp from ten until three. Kong Volmer, Oluf Bagers Gård and Værdsat are all closed on Sunday.
Is there smørrebrød anywhere on Funen other than Odense?
Not in this guide. We cover Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense and Aalborg, and all six smørrebrød addresses on Funen are in Odense. If you are heading for Svendborg, Nyborg or Faaborg, we have no recommendations to give — and we do not guess.
What does smørrebrød cost in Odense?
We give a price level rather than prices, because menus change. Three of the six are at level 2 — Kong Volmer, Værdsat and Mr. Torp — and three at level 3: HOS, Oluf Bagers Gård and Sortebro Kro. The current price is on each house's own menu.
Which smørrebrød place in Odense stays open longest?
For lunch it is Oluf Bagers Gård, which keeps going until five. In the evening it is Sortebro Kro, serving until midnight Monday to Saturday. Kong Volmer and Værdsat both close in the middle of the afternoon and have no dinner service.
Where are they in relation to each other?
Five of the six have postal code 5000, central Odense, and can be reached on foot from the pedestrian street: HOS and Værdsat are both on Kongensgade, Oluf Bagers Gård on Nørregade, Kong Volmer in Brandts Passage and Mr. Torp in Vintapperstræde. Sortebro Kro is the exception with 5260 and an address out by Den Fynske Landsby — that one needs transport.
Method and check date. The ranking is our own editorial assessment on a scale from 1 to 10 and not an average of guest reviews. Addresses and opening hours are taken from the places' own websites and checked in October 2026. Prices for individual dishes are deliberately absent: menus change, and we do not write a price we cannot see on the house's own site today. If you see something that does not match, the house's own page is the one that counts.
