About restaurants in Odense
A restaurant in Odense almost always means the old town. Apart from a couple of outliers they all sit within the same square kilometre, and they fall into three groups: the evening tables where the kitchen decides, the inns serving Danish cooking, and lunch, which here nearly always means smørrebrød — open sandwiches on rye, eaten with a knife and fork.
Goma on Kongensgade is omakase: the kitchen chooses, and it opens evenings only, Monday to Saturday. Restaurant Madeleine on Vestergade runs one menu from Wednesday to Saturday with few tables, so book well ahead. Kok & Vin on Store Gråbrødrestræde is the least formal of them — a French brasserie built on Funen produce, with a wine list the staff will happily choose from if you tell them what you normally drink.
Lunch is the city's strongest hand. HOS on Kongensgade puts fish first and closes on Mondays. Kong Volmer in Brandts Passage does the classics — herring, roast beef, the prawn-and-plaice plate — and shuts at four, so it is not an evening option. Oluf Bagers Gård on Nørregade serves in a Renaissance courtyard from the 1500s, where the street cannot be heard, with lunch and dinner and a break in between.
The rest covers more ground than the number suggests: Danish inn cooking on Overgade and in Lille Gråbrødrestræde, a half-timbered inn out by the Funen Village open-air museum, and Vietnamese, entirely plant-based food at Moc Chay on Nørregade at the cheap end of the scale. One shared warning: Sunday is the difficult day. Several houses are shut altogether, and those that open close earlier than usual.
