If you are eating out in Odense, the short answer is Kok & Vin at Store Gråbrødrestræde 19 — French brasserie tradition on Funen produce, and the highest score on the list.

The longer answer is about the day of the week, because that is what decides most in this city. Ten of the seventeen are closed on Sunday. Wednesday to Friday all seventeen are open; on Sunday seven are left. Planning a Sunday dinner in Odense is not a question of taste but of who has the lights on.

The order follows our editorial score, which weighs the kitchen, the produce and the craft — not guest ratings. Each entry gives the address and the opening hours, and at the bottom there are answers to what people ask before they book.

1. Kok & Vin, Indre By

Store Gråbrødrestræde 19. A French brasserie on Funen produce, in a side street off the pedestrian precinct. The wine list is worth reading rather than leafing through, and the kitchen holds on to a tradition rather than chasing one.

Opens at 17.30 and closes late, Monday to Saturday. Closed Sunday.

2. Goma, Indre By

Kongensgade 68. Japanese omakase in the middle of Odense: the kitchen decides and you sit back. A small room, an unhurried pace, and one of the city's three most expensive tables.

Evenings only, Monday to Saturday from 17.30.

3. Restaurant Madeleine, Indre By

Vestergade 5B. One menu, Funen produce in season, and the city's most ambitious table below the starred one. Few tables — book well ahead.

Wednesday to Saturday only. That is the shortest week on the list at four days, so it is somewhere you plan for rather than land in.

4. HOS, Indre By

Kongensgade 65. Smørrebrød and fish with a kitchen that dares more than the classics, and vegetarian dishes on the card. The city's best lunch table.

Closed Monday, opens 11.30. Evening service only on Friday and Saturday — the rest of the week it is lunch until half past three.

5. Restaurant SL, Indre By

Pogestræde 31A. Fish, shellfish and vegetables in five and seven courses, in a tight format at a high level. Evenings Monday to Saturday, lunch only Thursday to Saturday — and the lunch is in the same class as the dinner, which is rare.

6. Restaurant Nordatlanten, Odense Havn

Nordatlantisk Promenade 3. Fish and shellfish with the North Atlantic as the starting point, in Nordatlantisk Hus out on the harbour. Weekend lunch with a view of the water.

One of only four open all seven days — though Sunday only until four, so that day it is a lunch address.

7. Oluf Bagers Gård, Indre By

Nørregade 29. Smørrebrød and Funen cooking in a Renaissance courtyard from the 1500s, with a garden when the sun is out. Lunch and dinner with a break between.

Monday to Saturday, twelve to five and half past five to half past nine. Closed Sunday.

8. Albert, Indre By

Vestergade 13. A buffet of twenty-five fresh dishes with an open bar Thursday to Saturday — a different model from the rest of the list, and the only one of its kind in Odense.

Tuesday to Saturday from five. Cheaper in the first hour Tuesday to Thursday.

9. Kong Volmer, Brandts

Brandts Passage 31. Classic smørrebrød at lunch, with seats outside in the passage. One of only three places on the list without evening service — it closes at four, so come in good time.

Monday to Friday from eleven, Saturday from ten. Closed Sunday.

10. Restaurant Værdsat, Indre By

Kongensgade 31B. Smørrebrød on weekdays from eleven to three, and nothing more than that. The only place on the list open Monday to Friday only — no weekend at all.

Come before one.

11. Sortebro Kro, Den Fynske Landsby

Sejerskovvej 20B. Danish inn cooking in a half-timbered house by Den Fynske Landsby, the open-air museum. It is an outing rather than a night in town, and it is worth making an afternoon of.

Monday to Saturday, lunch twelve to four and dinner from half past five to midnight. Sunday lunch only.

12. Moc Chay, Nørregade

Nørregade 32. Vietnamese and entirely plant-based — the only vegan address on the list. A short menu, low prices, and most of it goes out of the door.

The list's only place at price level 1. Tuesday to Saturday, eleven to seven.

13. Den Gamle Kro, Overgade

Overgade 23. An inn in a half-timbered courtyard with a glass roof, classic Danish cooking. Open all seven days for both lunch and dinner. Of the four open the whole week, it and Eydes are the only two that also serve dinner on Sunday.

Half past eleven to nine Monday to Saturday, twelve to nine Sunday.

14. District 13, Indre By

Torvegade 1. Asian small plates with a card that changes often, and long evenings. Vegetarian dishes on the card.

Tuesday to Sunday — closed Monday. Lunch from Thursday, dinner the rest of the week.

15. Della Nonna, Thomas B. Thriges Gade

Thomas B. Thriges Gade 91. Traditional Italian pizza since 2010, by the harbour. Takeaway only — there are no tables, and you need to know that before you drive over.

Tuesday to Friday lunch and dinner, weekends dinner only until nine.

16. Klosterkroen, Indre By

Lille Gråbrødrestræde 2. Danish inn food without rewriting — fried pork belly, all you can eat — with seats outside in summer.

Tuesday to Saturday, twelve to ten on weekdays and until eleven Friday and Saturday.

17. Eydes, Indre By

Kongensgade 31A. A classic steakhouse with steaks from eleven in the morning and a bar that stays seated. Open until three in the morning on Friday and Saturday nights — by far the latest on the list, and the only one that works as the last stop of an evening.

Open all seven days.

Sunday is the city's weakest day

It is the most useful practical fact in this guide, and it applies to Odense to this degree in a way it does not elsewhere.

Day Open of the 17
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 17
Tuesday, Saturday 16
Monday 10
Sunday 7

The seven open on Sunday are Restaurant Nordatlanten, Den Gamle Kro, Sortebro Kro (lunch only), HOS, District 13, Della Nonna (takeaway) and Eydes. The rest — ten of the seventeen, including three of the top four — are closed.

Monday is the second worst with ten open. Closed on Monday are HOS, Moc Chay, Restaurant Madeleine, Albert, District 13, Klosterkroen and Della Nonna.

Lunch, dinner or both

The list divides more sharply than in the other cities.

Four are dinner only: Kok & Vin, Goma, Restaurant Madeleine and Albert. All four open between five and half past five, and there is no lunch service at all.

Three are lunch only: Kong Volmer, Restaurant Værdsat and Moc Chay. They close between three and seven, and dinner is not an option.

The other ten do both, though not necessarily every day — HOS serves dinner only on Friday and Saturday, and Restaurant SL serves lunch only Thursday to Saturday. It is worth reading the hours, not just the day.

What it costs

Odense has a wider price range than its size suggests.

  • Three sit at level 4, the highest: Goma, Restaurant Madeleine and Restaurant SL. All three are set menus rather than à la carte.
  • Eight sit at level 3, the normal range for dinner out.
  • Five sit at level 2: Kong Volmer, Restaurant Værdsat, District 13, Klosterkroen and Della Nonna.
  • One sits at level 1: Moc Chay on Nørregade.

The actual prices are on the restaurants' own pages and change, so we do not reproduce them here — a wrong number is worse than none.

Odense C and the rest of the city

Eleven of the seventeen are in Indre By, inside the pedestrian network and postcode 5000. If you are looking for a restaurant in Odense C, those are the ones: Kok & Vin, Goma, Madeleine, HOS, Restaurant SL, Oluf Bagers Gård, Albert, Værdsat, District 13, Klosterkroen and Eydes.

The other six are spread out, and three of them are worth the trip for exactly that reason: Restaurant Nordatlanten in Nordatlantisk Hus on the harbour, Sortebro Kro by Den Fynske Landsby, and Kong Volmer in Brandts Passage. Then Moc Chay on Nørregade, Den Gamle Kro on Overgade and Della Nonna by Thomas B. Thriges Gade.

It is a compact city: everything in Indre By can be walked in a quarter of an hour.

Diet and allergies

Four of the seventeen mark vegetarian dishes on the card: HOS, Moc Chay, District 13 and Della Nonna. Moc Chay is the only entirely plant-based one — the whole card is vegan, and it is not a corner of the menu.

That is fewer than in Copenhagen, and it is worth calling ahead if somebody in the party cannot eat everything. Several of the houses can do more than they write down.

Why the guide and the list page promise different things

The city has two pages about the same restaurants, and the difference is the promise.

  • This page promises a ranking. The order follows our editorial score, and the text explains why.
  • Restaurants in Odense promises an overview: all seventeen on a map, with distance, a price filter and open-now.

If it is smørrebrød rather than dinner, the six lunch addresses are in best smørrebrød in Odense, and for brunch or coffee they are in the brunch guide and the café guide.

Questions and answers

What is the best restaurant in Odense?

Kok & Vin at Store Gråbrødrestræde 19 holds the highest score on the list: a French brasserie on Funen produce with a wine list worth reading. If it should be a set menu rather than à la carte, Restaurant Madeleine at Vestergade 5B is the city's most ambitious — but it is only open Wednesday to Saturday.

Which restaurants in Odense are open on Sunday?

Seven of the seventeen: Restaurant Nordatlanten on the harbour, Den Gamle Kro on Overgade, HOS on Kongensgade, District 13 on Torvegade, Eydes on Kongensgade, Della Nonna (takeaway) and Sortebro Kro, which serves lunch only on Sunday. The other ten are closed — including Kok & Vin, Goma and Madeleine.

Where do you eat in Odense C?

Eleven of the seventeen are in Indre By inside the pedestrian network, and they cover the whole range from Moc Chay's plant-based lunch at level 1 to Goma's omakase at level 4. Everything in Indre By can be walked in a quarter of an hour, so the choice is about kitchen and weekday rather than distance.

Where do you get lunch in Odense?

Thirteen of the seventeen serve lunch. Three of them do only that: Kong Volmer in Brandts Passage, Restaurant Værdsat on Kongensgade and Moc Chay on Nørregade. HOS has the city's best lunch table but is closed on Mondays. On Sunday the lunch options are few — Sortebro Kro, Nordatlanten and Den Gamle Kro.

Where can you eat late in Odense?

Eydes at Kongensgade 31A is open until three in the morning on Friday and Saturday and is by far the latest on the list. Then comes Sortebro Kro, which closes at midnight, and Kok & Vin and Goma, both closing around eleven. The rest close between three and ten.

Is there anything for vegetarians and vegans?

Four mark vegetarian dishes: HOS, Moc Chay, District 13 and Della Nonna. Moc Chay at Nørregade 32 is the only entirely plant-based one — the whole card is vegan, and the prices are the lowest in the city. Call the others if it matters; several can do more than they list.

What is the most and least expensive?

The three most expensive sit at price level 4 and are all set menus: Goma, Restaurant Madeleine and Restaurant SL. The cheapest is Moc Chay at level 1. The middle is broad — eight at level 3 and five at level 2.

How many restaurants are in the guide?

Seventeen, and that is every restaurant in Odense in our dataset. To see them on a map with distance, a price filter and open-now, they are on restaurants in Odense.

The order follows our editorial score, which weighs the kitchen, the produce and the craft — not guest ratings, and not how much coverage a place gets. Restaurants with a Michelin star are deliberately left out; this guide is about places you can get a table at on a Tuesday.

Addresses and coordinates come from OpenStreetMap. Opening hours come from the restaurants themselves and are written out as they stood on 8 October 2026. None of the seventeen is listed with estimated hours. Holidays change them — check the individual page before you travel.

There are no paid placements in this guide, and none of the places knew they were being assessed.
