About bakeries in Aarhus

A bakery in Aarhus is rarely only a bakery. The eighteen places here run from the classic morning-bread bakery through coffee bars with their own roasteries to three ice cream shops, and it is worth knowing before you leave the house: some open at half past six, others not until midday.

La Cabra on Graven is why Aarhus gets mentioned alongside Copenhagen when the talk turns to coffee — light roasts from their own roastery and pastry baked on site. Moccacity on Gammel Munkegade does the same thing in a smaller room, Plukk in Frederiksbjerg serves its coffee among plants and smørrebrød, and Sigfreds Kaffebar on Klostergade is the one you stay in with a book.

For bread to take home, Schweizerbageriet on M.P. Bruuns Gade is the safe bet: open from half past six all seven days, with rolls, layer cakes and wienerbrød, which is what Danes call the pastry the rest of the world calls Danish. Mor Anna on Mejlgade opens at seven every day and keeps a breakfast table beside the counter, and Emmerys on Klostergade is organic throughout. For Emma on Vestergade makes a few things well but opens only Tuesday to Friday, and Gotfred on Studsgade is a pure patisserie whose range changes daily.

Finally the sweet things without flour: Mammis Gelato on Jægergårdsgade makes its ice cream in the shop, Byens Ismejeri on Aarhus Ø uses milk from Jutland farms, and Dolce Vita by Kridthøj Torv in Højbjerg is open every day until ten at night. That end of the category sits at the bottom of the price scale.

And the honest answer to a question people ask: there is no bakery on Aarhus Ø. Byens Ismejeri is the only address in the category out there, and it makes ice cream. For bread to take home from the harbour, La Cabra on Graven, Gotfred on Studsgade and Mor Anna on Mejlgade are the nearest — all three about a kilometre into town.
