About wine bars in Aarhus

Twelve wine bars in a city this size is a lot, and the explanation is that few of them are only wine bars. Here the wine bar is usually a kitchen with a list, a bookshop, a coffee bar by day or a pétanque court in the yard. That makes them easier to use: at most of them you can eat properly.

Pondus on Åboulevarden is the one the others are measured against — natural wine with plenty by the glass, small plates off the blackboard and a Bib Gourmand that nobody behaves as though they have. Hærværk on Frederiks Allé pours natural wine alongside a kitchen with no menu. Restaurant ET on Mindegade goes the other way, with a long French list and someone to guide you through it.

The pure wine bars are S'vinbar on Klostergade, open until one on Friday and Saturday and closed on Sunday, and Vin & Petanque in a yard on Østergade, where the hours follow the weather. Løve's Bog og VinCafé on Nørregade is a bookshop and a wine bar in one room — the books are for sale, the wine is for staying.

The rest put food first. Europa Mad & Vinbar on Havnegade chooses wine for smørrebrød, the Danish open sandwich; Forlæns og Baglæns on Jægergårdsgade serves Spanish tapas from midday until past midnight at weekends; and Os Kaffe og Vin on M.P. Bruuns Gade is a coffee bar by day and a wine bar at night in the same room. Several close on Sunday and Monday — check the day before you walk over.
