About street food spots in Aarhus

Street food in Aarhus is four places: three food halls and a market square. It is a small category, but it covers what it needs to, because Aarhus does not have street kitchens scattered across the city — it has gathered them under a roof, which in a Jutland autumn is an advantage.

The question asked most often is when things close, and the answer is not the same for kitchens and bars. The kitchens close at 21 in both Aarhus Street Food and Banken Food Hall — at Banken 21.30 on Friday and Saturday — while the bars carry on longer. Markedshallen closes at 21 every day. And Ingerslevs Marked closes as early as 14, and only on Wednesday and Saturday. If you want to eat late, last orders are around 21 whichever hall you pick.

Aarhus Street Food on Ny Banegårdsgade is the largest, with more than thirty kitchens under one roof, five minutes' walk from the central station. The kitchens are open every day from 11.30 to 21, and the bars stay open later. It is closed 23-26 December, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. It sits at the low end of the price scale, and it is where a group that cannot agree on anything can still eat together.

Banken Food Hall on Kannikegade occupies an old bank building in the middle of town. The kitchens close at 21, at 21.30 on Fridays and Saturdays, while the bars stay open until 23 Monday to Thursday, until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays and until 22 on Sundays — the one you end up in if you are already downtown. Markedshallen in Nicolinehus, out on Aarhus Ø, has stalls, a bar and shared tables with a view of the harbour, open every day from half past eleven until 21 with the bar until 22 — and the Sesam bakery in the same building opens at 10 on weekdays and 8 at the weekend.

Ingerslevs Marked is not street food in the usual sense but the city's market day: Wednesday and Saturday from eight until two on Ingerslevs Boulevard, with greens, fish, cheese, bread and coffee. Come in the morning — the best stalls pack up first, and at two it is over.
