About bars in Aarhus

The bars of Aarhus fall into three piles: cocktail bars, beer bars and værtshuse, the old Danish corner pubs. The most useful practical fact is that the cocktail bars keep the shortest weeks. Several do not open until Thursday, so a Tuesday evening looks nothing like what the weekend promises.

Sct. Pauls Apotek on Jægergårdsgade is the most complete of them: a decommissioned pharmacy with the cabinets still in place, cocktails, and a kitchen that keeps up. Gedulgt on Fredensgade means hidden and opens Thursday to Saturday, and Herr Bartels by the river has few seats and opens from Wednesday — come early or not at all.

Beer is easier to find. Mikkeller on Jægergårdsgade has twenty taps in constant rotation and opens every day. Erlings on Nørreport pours fourteen craft beers, plays jazz off the turntable and has live music most Saturdays. Kurts Mor on Fredens Torv is assembled from flea market finds and has a courtyard and concerts.

And then the pubs, which are what the city rests on. Peter Gift on M.P. Bruuns Gade is open from eleven until one and costs less than the rest of the street. Teater Bodega on Skolegade has hung on beside Aarhus Theatre since the 1950s, with the actors on the walls. Café Vestergade is coffee by day and beer at night, and Vinstuen in Fiskergyde has the longest hours in the city — despite the name, it is a pub.
