Aarhus has the advantage that one bar is rarely more than ten minutes from the next. That makes the city easy to spend an evening in — but it also means the good places fill up fast. Here is the order that tends to work.

Start in Frederiksbjerg

Sct. Pauls Apotek sits on Jægergårdsgade in a pharmacy that is no longer a pharmacy, and no attempt has been made to hide it: the cabinets are still there. It opens Wednesday to Saturday, evenings only, from half past five. On Wednesday and Thursday they close at midnight, on Friday and Saturday at two.

The centre, if you want company

Gedulgt on Fredensgade means hidden, and the bar makes a point of it. Open Thursday to Saturday — midnight on Thursday, two on Friday and Saturday. It is one of those bars where the drink takes time, and that is the intention.

Herr Bartels by the river keeps the same three days but closes at midnight throughout. If you are on Åboulevarden anyway, it is the obvious first stop rather than the last.

When you would rather sit down

Erlings on Nørreport plays jazz from the record player and has fourteen craft beers on tap. They open as early as two in the afternoon, and it is the place to go if the evening is meant to be conversation rather than music you have to shout over.

And when everything else closes

Vinstuen in Fiskergyde is the city's longest-opening pub: from eleven in the morning until five the next, six at the weekend. It is one of the oldest pubs in Aarhus, and it looks the part. Go when the other places turn the lights on — not before.

Three things worth knowing

  • Thursday is the right weekday. Several of the cocktail bars only open from Thursday, and by Friday they are full.
  • The distances are short. Jægergårdsgade to Åboulevarden is a fifteen-minute walk, and Åboulevarden to Fiskergyde is two minutes.
  • Check the day, not just the time. Several of these places open three days a week, and that is where plans go wrong.
