About brunch spots in Odense

Brunch in Odense is a weekend meal, and the choice is smaller than in the bigger Danish cities. Six places are worth the walk, they all sit within walking distance of each other, and they do not do the same thing. The difference is whether brunch arrives composed from a menu or as a plate you build the rest of the day around.

The hardest fact to find is not when these places are open, but when they actually serve brunch. The two are not the same. Cafe Fleuri on Nørregade has the widest window in the city: the house says brunch can be ordered all seven days between eight and two. Cuckoo's Nest on Vestergade has the narrowest — the brunch menu runs only on Saturday and Sunday between ten and one, even though the door stays open until midnight the rest of the week.

The Folk on Kongensgade is the new generation: a composed brunch rather than a buffet, coffee as the main business, and a menu short enough that the kitchen can stand behind all of it. It is full before eleven on a Saturday. Deilig sits in the Hans Christian Andersen garden with tables outside and serves brunch at weekends — note that the café changes its opening hours five times across the year, so check the day before you go.

Mr. Torp in Vintapperstræde, one of the city's narrowest lanes, has brunch, smørrebrød and tapas on one menu, but it opens at ten and has room only for pairs. Fredo's Coffee Right in Brandts Passage is more coffee bar than brunch spot, with covered outdoor seats, Tuesday to Sunday. Monday is the thin day: Mr. Torp and Fredo's are closed.
