About bakeries in Odense
Odense has more bakeries than restaurants, and they are not gathered in one place. They sit where people live: in Hunderup, in the Skibhus quarter, in Dalum, in Stige north of the city. A café in Odense, on the other hand, means going into the centre, and there the same few streets keep coming up.
The classic kind opens at six in the morning. Rise's Brød on Hunderupvej does it every weekday, with rolls baked the same morning and birthday cakes and wedding cakes alongside the daily bread. Stjernebageriet in Odense SØ opens just as early every day of the week, and Brunsvigerhuset in Stige runs from six to five daily — useful if you are heading north.
The new kind is thinner on the ground. Brød at the western end of Vestergade puts sourdough first and closes on Sundays. Nelles Coffee & Wine on Overgade opens at seven with coffee and finishes with wine in the glass — same table, different time of day. And Spangsberg Chokolade on Klokkestøbervej in Odense M is not a café but the factory outlet of the flødebolle factory in Taastrup, open Wednesday to Saturday.
The cafés in this category are the city's old meeting places. Cafe Biografen in the Brandts textile mill has been there for decades and runs from morning coffee to evening beer, with a cinema in the same building. Café Skt. Gertrud on Jernbanegade stays open until three on Friday and Saturday, long after everyone else has shut. Check the day before you go: several of the smallest open only four or five days a week.
