Brunch has become the meal every Danish café has to be able to do, which is why the gap between places has grown rather than closed. In some places it is a kitchen that got up early. In others it is a plate of bought-in cold cuts and a bowl of yoghurt you could have assembled yourself.
These are the 29 places worth going to across the four cities this guide covers. Each city has its own list, ranked by our editorial score, with the address and opening hours written out. At the end are answers to the questions visitors actually ask: when the queues are, whether you can book, and what it costs.
What separates good brunch from bad
Three things settle it almost every time.
Do they bake the bread themselves? It is the fastest way to tell whether there is a kitchen behind the counter. Nearly every place at the top of these lists is a bakery first and a brunch spot second — Lille Bakery, Jumbo Bakery, Mor Anna, Caféministeriet.
Is the plate composed or counted? A brunch built around three or four things that belong together beats a spread of fourteen small bowls. Mad & Kaffe turned this into a format where you pick three, five or seven items, and it works because each item stands on its own.
What happens after eleven? Places that only do weekend brunch rarely have the routine of places that open every day.
The order follows our editorial score from 1 to 10. It weighs the kitchen, the ingredients and whether the place makes things itself. We do not count how many items are on the plate.
When you can actually get brunch
Brunch is talked about as a weekend meal, and that is the smaller half of the truth. Of the 29 places in this guide, all 29 are open Wednesday to Saturday, and only six close on Mondays: Lille Bakery in Copenhagen, Manda Eatery in Aarhus, Mr. Torp and Fredo's Coffee Right in Odense, and Lille Nyhavn and Brasserie Kunsten in Aalborg. On Tuesdays, Lille Bakery is the only closed place in the whole guide.
Sunday is the day worth checking before you leave. 27 of the 29 are open, but several close earlier than the rest of the week — Peace in Aalborg shuts at four on Sunday against eleven on Saturday, Sonny on Rådhusstræde at four against six, and Sidecar on Skyttegade at half past three. The two that close altogether are Lille Nyhavn and Det Tredje Sted, both in Aalborg. That is worth knowing there in particular, because Aalborg is otherwise the city in this guide with the most cafés open late.
Fourteen of the 29 open at eight or earlier. That is the half that works for breakfast before work rather than a late weekend plate:
| City | Earliest | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Copenhagen | Orsa Coffee and Wulff & Konstali, 7am | Sonny 7.30, Atelier September 7.30 |
| Aarhus | Mor Anna, 7am | Jumbo Bakery 7.30 |
| Aalborg | Brett & Bagels, 7.45am | Peace 8 |
| Odense | The Folk and Cafe Fleuri, 8am | Deilig 9 |
Odense is the only one of the four cities where none of the brunch places
opens before eight. To eat early there, it is the bakeries on
/en/odense/bagerier, not the cafés.
And fifteen of the 29 are open past eight in the evening — Kalaset, Mad & Kaffe, Granola, Café Smagløs, Deilig, Cafe Fleuri, Cuckoo's Nest, Caféministeriet, Peace and Det Tredje Sted among them. For most of these, brunch is not a sitting that ends at two; it is a card the kitchen keeps open for as long as the café is.
Brunch in Copenhagen
The city has the broadest brunch culture in the country, from the bakery out on Refshaleøen to the flea-market front room by Nørreport. Ten places are in the guide.
Lille Bakery sits at the top. Refshalevej 213B on Refshaleøen, open Wednesday to Sunday from eight to five. Bakery, kitchen and natural wine at the same address, and the vegetable dishes follow the season closely. It is a trip out there, and it is worth the trip.
Atelier September, Kronprinsessegade 62 in the city centre. Monday to Friday from half past seven to six, weekends eight to five. The avocado toast on rye has become a landmark for the city's whole breakfast culture. The room is small and they take no reservations — come before ten.
La Banchina at Refshalevej 141 has sixteen seats, a swimming jetty and a sauna. Open from eight every day, latest Thursday to Saturday when they serve until eight in the evening. A few dishes at a time, with natural wine.
Sonny on Rådhusstræde 5 does French-leaning breakfast in a side street off Strøget. From half past seven on weekdays, from nine at weekends. Mondays they close at four.
Mad & Kaffe, Sønder Boulevard 68 in Vesterbro. Open every day from half past eight until eight in the evening — the longest brunch day on the list. You choose three, five or seven items yourself. Expect a queue at weekends.
Sidecar on Skyttegade 5 in Nørrebro closes at four, half past three on Sunday, and does nothing but breakfast and lunch. Short menu, properly executed.
Granola on Værnedamsvej 5 in Frederiksberg C is fitted out like a 1930s pharmacy and opens at eight in the morning — serving until eleven Monday to Wednesday and midnight Thursday and Friday. Sundays they close at four.
Orsa Coffee, Vesterbrogade 46, pours Prolog coffee and fresh juice from seven on weekdays. Kalaset on Vendersgade 16 by Nørreport serves brunch all day, including four in the afternoon, and stays open until two on Friday and Saturday nights. Wulff & Konstali on Islands Brygge opens at seven every day, a few minutes from the harbour baths.

Brunch in Aarhus
Brunch in Aarhus clusters around Frederiksbjerg and the Latin Quarter. Six places are in the guide.
Jumbo Bakery & Eatery on Ankersgade 12B is both bakery and dining room, and the combination is what makes the difference. Wednesday to Sunday from eight to five — they are closed Monday and Tuesday, so check the day first.
Manda Eatery, Jægergårdsgade 57. Open from nine every day, latest Friday and Saturday until seven. Vegetable-led kitchen, baking done in house, and no gap between breakfast and cake.
Kähler Spisesalon on M.P. Bruuns Gade 33 serves its cakes on the ceramics house's own tableware and puts on a generous weekend brunch. Close to the central station.
Havrum at Egå Havvej 31 north of the city is the most expensive brunch in the Aarhus selection — price level 3 of 4 — and the only one looking out over a marina. Weekend breakfast from nine, weekdays not until eleven.
Mor Anna on Mejlgade 5 is open every day, from seven on weekdays, and is bakery and breakfast table in one. Café Smagløs on Klostertorvet 7 does a large, classic brunch all weekend with outdoor seating on the square.

Brunch in Odense
Odense is small enough that you can walk between all six places in half an hour.
Deilig at H.C. Andersen Haven 3 has outdoor seating in the garden and brunch all seven days — from ten on weekdays, from nine at the weekend, with last order at 11.45am. Three elements cost 120 kroner, five 160 and seven 190. Friday and Saturday they stay open until ten in the evening.
The Folk on Kongensgade 1 builds brunch around the coffee rather than the other way round, and it is composed rather than a buffet. It fills up at weekends — come before eleven.
Mr. Torp sits in Vintapperstræde 16, one of the narrowest lanes in the city, doing breakfast, brunch and smørrebrød in the same room. The place is small.
Cafe Fleuri, Nørregade 28, opens at nine every day and serves until nine in the evening Thursday to Saturday. Fredo's Coffee Right in Brandts Passage 31G is a coffee bar first, Tuesday to Sunday nine to six, with covered outdoor seating. Cuckoo's Nest on Vestergade 73 runs from breakfast at nine to a night bar at two.

Brunch in Aalborg
Aalborg has fewer dedicated brunch places than the other three cities, but the longest opening hours. Seven places are in the guide.
Lille Nyhavn on Strandgade 6 serves lunch and smørrebrød Tuesday to Saturday from half past eleven to half past eight. The address has postcode 9400 and lies in Nørresundby, north of the Limfjord.
Brasserie Kunsten on Kong Christians Allé 50 sits inside Alvar Aalto's art museum, and the architecture is half the visit. You do not need a museum ticket to eat there. Tuesday to Sunday until five.
Caféministeriet on Møllegade 19 serves brunch all week from nine and stays open until eleven — until two on Friday and Saturday. Peace on Boulevarden 4 opens at eight Monday to Saturday and at nine on Sunday, and has outdoor seating.
Brett & Bagels on Myrdalstræde 268 out by the university is the cheapest on the list — price level 1 of 4 — and bakes its bagels on site from a quarter to eight on weekdays. Det Tredje Sted on Bispensgade 9B runs from breakfast to dinner every day from nine, and Café Friends on Urbansgade 20 does brunch, burgers and vegetarian dishes until midnight at weekends.

Diet, allergies and seats outside
Four numbers from the dataset worth knowing before you choose:
Sixteen of the 29 mark vegetarian dishes on the card — a little over half, and more than in any other category in the guide. Brunch is the meal where it is easiest, because a good part of the plate is green to begin with.
Vegan and gluten-free are rare. Exactly one place in each: Cafe Fleuri at Nørregade 28 in Odense has vegan dishes on the card, and Deilig in H.C. Andersen Haven has gluten-free. That does not mean the others cannot help — it means those two are the ones who say so themselves. Call ahead if it matters.
Twenty-two of the 29 have seats outside. That is nearly all of them, and it is the single biggest difference between brunch in May and brunch in November. The seven without are the smallest rooms and the ones in a passage or a museum building.
Café Smagløs on Klostertorvet is the only place in the guide marked dog-friendly.
Questions and answers
What does brunch cost in Denmark?
Almost every place in this guide sits at price level 2 of 4, the normal range for a Danish café. Brett & Bagels in Aalborg is the only one at level 1, and Havrum by Egå Marina the only one at level 3. Actual prices are on each place's own menu and change over time — we do not reproduce them here, because a wrong number is worse than no number.
Where can you get brunch on a Sunday?
27 of the guide's 29 places are open on Sunday. The two that are not are both in Aalborg: Lille Nyhavn on Strandgade and Det Tredje Sted on Bispensgade. Note too that Sunday is shorter than the rest of the week in several places — Peace on Boulevarden closes at four against eleven on Saturday, Sidecar on Skyttegade at half past three, Sonny on Rådhusstræde at four and Mr. Torp in Vintapperstræde at three. For a late Sunday, Kalaset by Nørreport is open until eleven and Caféministeriet in Aalborg until ten.
When are the queues smallest?
Before nine at weekends, and any weekday morning. Several of the most popular places take no reservations for parties of two or four, so timing is the only thing you control. After half past ten on a Saturday there is a wait at most places in all four cities.
Where can you get brunch on a weekday?
Twenty-three of the 29 are open on Mondays and twenty-eight on Tuesdays. The six that close on Mondays are Lille Bakery in Copenhagen, Manda Eatery in Aarhus, Mr. Torp and Fredo's Coffee Right in Odense, and Lille Nyhavn and Brasserie Kunsten in Aalborg. Lille Bakery is the only one that also closes on Tuesday — they open on Wednesday. Havrum by Egå Marina is open every day, but not until eleven on weekdays, which makes it a lunch place Monday to Friday and a breakfast place at the weekend.
Where can you eat early in the morning?
Wulff & Konstali on Islands Brygge opens at seven every day, and Mor Anna on Mejlgade and Orsa Coffee on Vesterbrogade do the same on weekdays. Granola on Værnedamsvej follows at eight, and Brett & Bagels in Aalborg opens at a quarter to eight.
Where can you sit late?
Kalaset by Nørreport serves brunch all day, including the afternoon, and stays open until two on Friday and Saturday nights. Caféministeriet in Aalborg and Cuckoo's Nest in Odense keep the same late hours. Mad & Kaffe in Vesterbro serves until eight in the evening every day.
Is brunch a buffet or a plate?
Almost everywhere in this guide, a plate. The buffet has gone out of fashion in the four cities, and the places ranked highest here serve a composed plate of a few things that belong together. Mad & Kaffe on Sønder Boulevard turned the choice into the model itself — you pick three, five or seven items from a card — and The Folk in Odense says plainly that it serves composed plates rather than a buffet. For quantity over composition, the weekend brunch at Café Smagløs on Klostertorvet and Kähler Spisesalon on M.P. Bruuns Gade are the two closest to the older kind.
Where can you get vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free brunch?
Sixteen of the 29 have vegetarian dishes on the card, among them Lille Bakery and Atelier September in Copenhagen, Manda Eatery in Aarhus, The Folk in Odense and Peace in Aalborg. Vegan and gluten-free are rarer: Cafe Fleuri in Odense is the only place in the guide with vegan on the card, and Deilig in H.C. Andersen Haven the only one with gluten-free. These are the venues' own markings — the others may well have options they simply do not list.
Can you book a table for brunch?
At some places, not all. Atelier September and La Banchina in Copenhagen take no reservations for small parties, and the same goes for several of the smaller rooms. Call or write ahead if there are more than four of you — that is usually where the rules change.
Where can you sit with children?
Mad & Kaffe on Sønder Boulevard, Wulff & Konstali on Islands Brygge and Café Friends on Urbansgade all have space and long hours. Brasserie Kunsten in Aalborg sits in the museum building with room around the tables. The smallest places — La Banchina with its sixteen seats, Mr. Torp in Vintapperstræde — are harder with a pram.
How this list was made
The order follows our editorial score, which weighs the kitchen, the ingredients and whether the place makes things itself rather than buying them in. Guest ratings from external sources appear on each place's own page but play no part in the ranking.
All 29 places in this guide have their own page in the dataset and appear with a map and opening hours at the bottom. Addresses and coordinates come from OpenStreetMap. Opening hours come from the places themselves and are written out as they stood when this page was last reviewed on 5 October 2026. For Kähler Spisesalon, Café Smagløs and The Folk the hours are an estimate, because the houses do not publish them. Weekends, public holidays and summer closures change them — check the individual page before you set off.
There are no paid placements in this guide, and none of the places knew they were being assessed.
