About bars in Odense

The bars in Odense gather around two streets. Vindegade and Vestergade run west of the pedestrian street, and most of the city's nine sit between them. This is not a cocktail district. It is brown bars, old pubs and cafés that turn into bars once it gets dark — and that shows in the prices too.

Carlsens Kvarter on Hunderupvej is the reference. It has poured craft beer since that was a rarity, keeps more than a hundred on the list, and the staff can explain the difference between the Danish and the Belgian. The furniture is worn, the music is not something you shout over, and it runs from noon until one in the morning, Monday to Saturday. On Sunday it closes at seven.

Den Smagløse Café on Vindegade has been going since 1996 and looks like a great-grandmother's living room: free board games, a weekly quiz, DJs on Saturdays and a courtyard under vines that fills the moment the sun reaches it. Café Viggos further down the same street is the neighbourhood room — open from noon until late, fixed prices, no doorman. Cafe Kræz on Gråbrødre Plads has the outdoor seats and stays open until three, Thursday to Saturday.

The rest are hybrids. Record Pusher on Overgade is a record shop by day and a bar at night, and Friday is the only evening that runs to eleven. Cafe Biografen in Brandts goes from morning coffee to draught beer without changing tone, and Cuckoo's Nest on Vestergade starts at nine in the morning and finishes at two at night. If it has to be late, JUNE BAR on Vestergade opens on Friday and Saturday only.
