About wine bars in Aalborg
Five wine bars is not many, but the five in Aalborg look nothing like each other. There is a Renaissance cellar, a Portuguese list, two kitchens that double as wine bars, and one small room where you ask rather than read. That is enough to choose by the kind of evening you want.
Duus Vinkælder is the one nobody can copy. Wine has been poured in the vaults beneath Jens Bang's House, a Renaissance merchant's mansion, since 1624, and the low ceilings and dark rooms are the whole reason to go down there. Smørrebrød and classic Danish dishes come with it, but a glass on its own is fine. Closed Sunday.
Douro on Danmarksgade has its centre of gravity in Portugal without staying there, opens as early as eleven and runs tastings. There is a shop attached, so the bottle can come home with you. Vin og Venner on Gravensgade is the opposite size: a handful of tables, Wednesday to Saturday from four, and no list on the wall — you describe what you like and the host chooses.
The last two are restaurants that take wine seriously. Pingvin on Stjernepladsen builds small plates around the glass and opens as early as eleven on Friday and Saturday. Struktur on C.W. Obels Plads keeps the bar going past midnight on Friday and Saturday. Sunday and Monday are the thinnest days in the whole category — check before you go.
