About bars in Aalborg

The bars of Aalborg live in the shadow of Jomfru Ane Gade, the drinking street the city is famous for, which is a shame, because the best of them are not on it. Nine places here, and they split three ways: the cellars and the specialists, the day cafés that turn into bars after dark, and the street itself.

Basement Beer Bar on Løkkegade is the argument for the cellar: craft beer on changing taps, a board with the day's list, and no music to shout over. Whiskybaren occupies a room inside Café Alpha on Jens Bangs Gade, reckoned to be the oldest tavern in the city, and runs tastings and auctions. Sylvius on Algade keeps more than eighty gins and opens only Thursday to Saturday.

Nede Paa Jorden on Nørregade is French in tone with a real kitchen behind the bar, and its courtyard fills the moment the sun clears the rooftops. Cafe Vesterå is hidden in a side street off Bispensgade and changes character through the day: coffee in the morning, cocktails once it gets dark.

On the street, Proud Mary opens earliest and widest: seats outside, 13.00 at the weekend and 15.00 on weekdays, all seven days, but the doors shut at 2. Black Swan, a few numbers down, opens Thursday to Saturday only — but until 3, which makes it the street's latest bar. Outside the centre, Cafe Frederiksberg on Hadsundvej has regular faces and fixed prices, and Studenterhuset on Gammeltorv is the cheapest way in the city to hear a band. Several of the bars are closed Sunday.
