About bars in Copenhagen

Copenhagen's bars fall into two camps, and you feel the difference on the way in: the ones where the drink is built to a recipe somebody thought hard about, and the ones where the beer is cheap and nobody looks at what you are wearing. There is plenty of both, and they rarely share a street.

Ruby on Nybrogade is the fixed point of the first camp — a cocktail bar in a 1740 townhouse facing Christiansborg, running since 2007, with a minimum age of twenty-one. Curfew on Stenosgade is the closed-door version, a speakeasy with hand-crank shakers and vintage spirits, shut on Mondays and for all of July. Bar Una on Oehlenschlægersgade makes drinks by conversation rather than by list and only opens Wednesday to Saturday.

The other camp is cheaper and more direct. Kihoskh on Sønder Boulevard is kiosk and beer bar in one, with one of the widest beer fridges in the city and room to sit on the kerb. Mikkeller & Friends on the corner of Stefansgade has forty taps in constant rotation and will pour you a taster if you cannot decide. Dupong on Griffenfeldsgade has a table tennis table in the middle of the room and some of the cheapest draught beer in town.

Finally there are the places an evening ends. Kassen on Nørrebrogade has fast bartenders and stays open until two on Friday and Saturday, and Baggen in the Meatpacking District — formerly Bakken — plays late from Thursday to Saturday. For something quieter, Gensyn on Rolighedsvej and Ramblin' Bar on Ingerslevsgade open in the afternoon and keep the prices legible.
