About street food spots in Copenhagen
Street food in Copenhagen is ten places that barely resemble each other. Two are markets with many stalls, several are single kitchens with one thing on the menu, and a couple sit by the water and are as much about the view as the food. What they share is the price: all of them are at the cheap end.
Opening hours are the easy part here: all ten are open seven days a week. That is unusual for Copenhagen, where Sunday and Monday are the normal closing days. Torvehallerne opens first, at ten, and also closes first — seven in the evening on weekdays and five on Sunday. Jagger on Nørrebrogade closes latest, ten most days and eleven on Friday and Saturday, and the other eight close between eight and half past nine on weekdays. Hana Sushi in Sydhavnen opens latest of them all, at one. The times are listed place by place below, with an open-now badge.
Torvehallerne at Israels Plads is the one that looks most like a market: two halls, around sixty stalls, fish, cheese, smørrebrød, coffee and tacos in the same room. It is open all week and busiest in the middle of the day — come outside the lunch peak if you want a table. Reffen on Refshaleøen is the large open-air version, dozens of stalls in shipping containers, but seasonal: the house publishes the dates, and it closes on 2 November and reopens in mid-March.
The two places you seek out for something specific are in the Meatpacking District and the old town. Hija de Sanchez on Slagterboderne mills its own corn for the tortillas and was started by a former Noma pastry chef. Gasoline Grill on Landgreven makes four kinds of burger and no more, uses organic meat, and closes when it sells out.
The rest is waterfront and everyday eating. Broens Gadekøkken by the Inner Harbour Bridge in Christianshavn has long tables looking across at Nyhavn and a smaller, hand-picked set of stalls. And Jagger on Nørrebrogade is the one you use when you planned nothing: tacos and burgers at fast-food prices but with better ingredients, open until ten in the evening and eleven at weekends.
