About bakeries in Copenhagen
A bakery in Copenhagen is rarely just a bakery. The category covers three things that have little to do with each other: the old shop selling Danish pastry over the counter, the sourdough bakery with its own coffee roastery next door, and the patisserie with layer cake in the window. The city has 34 of them here, concentrated in Nørrebro and Østerbro.
Juno the Bakery on Århusgade is the one everybody else is measured against, and the queue outside is for the cardamom bun. Hart Bageri on Gammel Kongevej bakes sourdough that keeps for days and lets you watch the work. Andersen & Maillard on Møllegade has a roastery and a bakery under one roof, and Galst Bageri on Lipkesgade makes some of the best sourdough in town from a shop that closes early.
The old houses do the opposite, and do it well. Sankt Peders Bageri in the Latin Quarter is the city's oldest, and its Wednesday cinnamon swirl, the size of a plate, is gone long before lunch. Conditori La Glace on Skoubogade has made cream layer cakes since 1870, and Perchs Tea Room serves tea above an 1835 tea merchant on Kronprinsensgade. Meyers Bageri on Jægersborggade does the Danish classics organically.
Coffee is the other half. The Coffee Collective on Jægersborggade set the standard for Danish specialty coffee, and Democratic Coffee, inside the main library on Krystalgade, has the most talked-about almond croissant in the city. For several of them the rule is simple: be there before eleven. If you need something later, Andersen Bakery on Islands Brygge opens at half past six, and Kaffedepartementet in Nordvest stays open until eight in the evening.
