About brunch spots in Copenhagen

Brunch in Copenhagen is two different meals that ended up with the same name. One is breakfast on the way to work — a coffee and a pastry taken standing at a counter in the old town. The other is the long Saturday table, where you order a plate with seven things on it and stay until two. The city does both, but rarely at the same address.

Atelier September on Kronprinsessegade set the tone for the first kind: avocado on rye in a small room of white tiles. They take no reservations, and after ten there are people standing along the wall. Sonny in Rådhusstræde and Orsa Coffee on Vesterbrogade work the same way — a short menu, open from seven, and no wait at all on a weekday.

The other kind is Mad & Kaffe on Sønder Boulevard, where you build the plate yourself from three, five or seven items, and where the doors are open from half past eight until eight every day of the week. The weekend queue is real. Sidecar in Skyttegade does the same thing on a smaller scale and closes at four without attempting an evening.

Then there is Refshaleøen, which is its own case. La Banchina has sixteen seats, a jetty and a sauna, and Lille Bakery a couple of hundred metres away bakes its own bread and pours natural wine with lunch. Both stay open late enough that brunch can turn into something else. No bus goes all the way out — take a bike or the harbour ferry.
