Nyhavn is the most photographed stretch in Copenhagen, and Kongens Nytorv sits at the end of it. The two belong together — the canal begins where the square stops — and the question people ask is the same in both places: where do you actually eat around here?

The short answer belongs up front. None of the 25 places in this guide sits on Nyhavn itself. The nearest one is 137 metres away. What that means, and what to do instead, is in the next section.

The guide covers everything within 600 metres' walk of either the canal or the square — five to ten minutes on foot — and every place is listed with address, distance, opening hours and price level. The order follows our editorial score, not the distance.

Should you eat on Nyhavn itself?

We have no address on Nyhavn in the dataset. It is worth saying precisely what that means: it is a fact about our list, not a verdict on the street. The canal is lined with places to eat, and they are not here because none of them has come through the editorial needle — not because we checked them and found them wanting.

What we can say with numbers: only four of the 25 places sit within 300 metres of the canal. They are

Two of them are on Store Strandstræde, which runs parallel to the canal one corner inland. That is the street to turn into if you are standing on Nyhavn and want to eat somewhere that is on this list.

And there is one place where Nyhavn is the whole point without being the address: Broens Gadekøkken at Strandgade 95 sits 414 metres away on the far side of the Inderhavn bridge, and from there you look straight back at the canal. Food stalls, price level 1, and the view is what people come for. The food stalls are open every day from half past eleven to eight Sunday to Thursday and from eleven to nine Friday and Saturday; the bars stay open an hour longer.

The nearest — five minutes' walk

Damindra, Sankt Annæ Plads 16

179 metres from Nyhavn. The best sushi in the city without a star, and the only place in the guide at the top price level. Evenings are omakase; à la carte exists only at lunch. Open Tuesday to Saturday, lunch 12.15 to 14 and dinner 17 to 22. Score 9.0 — the highest rated restaurant in the area; only the wine bar Ved Stranden 10 and Jazzhus Montmartre sit higher, at 9.1.

Den Vandrette, Havnegade 53A

137 metres from Nyhavn — the closest place on the list. A natural wine bar in a cellar with tables right down to the water. Open Tuesday to Saturday from five to eleven, so it is closed on Sunday and Monday — the most overlooked detail in the guide, because those are exactly the two days people walk by the harbour.

Zeleste, Store Strandstræde 6

230 metres from Nyhavn, 239 from Kongens Nytorv — the only place in the guide that sits equally close to both. Danish-French in a courtyard, and open all seven days from noon, until ten on weekdays and half past ten on Friday and Saturday. Price level 2. If you arrive from the canal without a booking, this is where to start.

Nebbiolo Winebar, Store Strandstræde 18

206 metres from Nyhavn. An Italian wine bar one corner from the canal, open all seven days from three in the afternoon until midnight — the longest unbroken window of the four nearest. That makes it the place between lunch and dinner, when most of the quarter is shut.

Palægade, Palægade 8

369 metres from Nyhavn, 294 from Kongens Nytorv. Classic lunchtime smørrebrød and a French-Danish evening menu. Lunch half past eleven to five Monday to Saturday, dinner six to midnight, and Sunday is lunch only. If smørrebrød is what you came for, the full ranking is in the best smørrebrød in Copenhagen.

POPL, Strandgade 108

470 metres from Nyhavn, over the bridge and down Strandgade. A burger from noma's laboratory at 150 kroner. Dinner all seven days from five to half past ten, and lunch only on Saturday and Sunday, twelve to two.

At Kongens Nytorv

The square has more places close to it than the canal does: seven of the 25 sit within 300 metres of Kongens Nytorv against four at Nyhavn. There is a simple reason — the canal has water on one side, the square has streets on every side.

The highest rated restaurant by the square is Kinyōbi at 8.7, 298 metres away on Antonigade, followed by Palægade at 8.6 and L'Alsace at 8.5. Two addresses rate higher, both at 9.1, but neither is a restaurant: Ved Stranden 10 is a wine bar and Jazzhus Montmartre is a music venue. If you want a table rather than a glass or a concert, the list starts at Kinyōbi.

Pastis, Adelgade 1

The only place in the guide that describes itself as sitting by Kongens Nytorv. A French brasserie with steak frites and oysters, open from eleven all seven days — until eleven at night, and until one on Friday and Saturday.

L'Alsace, Ny Østergade 9

225 metres from the square and the closest place of all. Oysters and Alsatian cooking in a courtyard off Pistolstræde. Monday to Saturday, half past eleven to midnight; closed on Sunday.

Kinyōbi, Antonigade 2

298 metres. A Japanese listening bar with vinyl and a charcoal grill, omakase at 650 kroner. Opens at five every day and closes at two in the morning on Friday and Saturday — one of the three latest addresses in the guide.

La Vecchia Signora, Grønnegade 14

258 metres. Sixteen pizzas and a Sardinian wine list, all seven days twelve to four and five to eleven. Price level 2. More Italian addresses are in the Italian restaurant guide.

Buka, Store Kongensgade 18

284 metres, and the only place in the guide that opens before ten. Laminated pastry from seven in the morning, all seven days, until six. If the day starts in this quarter, it starts here.

Ved Stranden 10, Ved Stranden 10

343 metres from the square. A wine bar on the canal with a list you learn from — and a score of 9.1, the joint highest in the area alongside Jazzhus Montmartre. Monday to Friday from three, Saturday from twelve, closed on Sunday.

Which kitchen are you looking for?

It is what Google itself suggests when you type either place name: Italian, French, Danish, Asian. Here is how the 25 divide, counted in the dataset.

Two kitchens that get searched for we have none of here: Thai and Chinese. That is a fact about our list and not about the quarter — we have no address in the area we would recommend for either.

And if you are after fish, the answer is oysters. Two of the 25 keep them on the menu year round: L'Alsace and Pastis. Add the fish cakes at the Broens food stalls. There is no actual fish restaurant in the area.

The split: seventeen restaurants, three wine bars, three street food addresses, two bakeries and one music venue. On price, twelve sit at level 3, nine at level 2, three at level 1 and one — Damindra — at level 4.

When can you eat?

This is the information that most often decides the trip, and it is calculated from the opening hours rather than guessed.

Sunday is not a problem here. Eighteen of the 25 are open on Sunday, and seventeen are open all seven days — unusually many for Copenhagen, where Sunday and Monday are the normal closing days. Monday is covered even better, with twenty open.

The seven that close on Sunday are worth knowing by name, because the three highest rated in the whole area are among them: Ved Stranden 10 and Jazzhus Montmartre (both 9.1) and Damindra (9.0, Tuesday to Saturday only). Then Den Vandrette (closed Sunday and Monday), L'Alsace, Marv & Ben (dinner only, Tuesday to Saturday) and Perchs Tea Room. The other way round, Barabba is open on Sunday with lunch but closed Monday and Tuesday.

The day starts at Buka at seven and ends at two in three places: Pluto, Ambra and Kinyōbi, all three on Friday and Saturday. In between sits Slotskælderen hos Gitte Kik, open eleven to five every day and serving lunch only — herring and aquavit in a cellar from 1910.

All 25 appear with their opening hours in the overview table at the top of the page, taken straight from the places' own information, so they cannot go stale down here in the text. Two things the table cannot carry are worth having: Broens Gadekøkken keeps two sets of hours — the food stalls Sunday to Thursday 11.30 to 20 and Friday and Saturday 11 to 21, while the bars run an hour longer — and Jazzhus Montmartre's times are an estimate, because the club does not publish them. It is marked on its own page and should be checked if the concert is the reason for the trip.

Where this guide belongs

Nyhavn and Kongens Nytorv are in Indre By, and we have a guide to the quarter as a whole too: Indre By walks through 29 addresses from Gammel Strand to Nørreport. This guide promises something else — the distance to two specific points — and that is why it exists. If you want a map, filters and open-now, the whole city is at places to eat in Copenhagen, and the ranking of the city's best is in the best restaurants in Copenhagen.

And in November and December a third guide belongs here. Six of the city's julefrokost addresses sit within six hundred metres of the canal — Zeleste at 170 metres, Den Vandrette 190, Palægade 310, Pluto 510, Ved Stranden 10 590 and Slotskælderen 600 — measured on the same coordinates as the distances above. Prices, dates and minimum party sizes are in julefrokost in Copenhagen.

Questions and answers

Where do you eat in Nyhavn?

Not on the canal itself, if you go by this list: none of the 25 places has an address on Nyhavn. The four nearest sit 137 to 230 metres away — Den Vandrette on Havnegade, Damindra on Sankt Annæ Plads, and Nebbiolo and Zeleste on Store Strandstræde. From the canal that is two to three minutes on foot.

What is closest to Nyhavn?

Den Vandrette at Havnegade 53A, 137 metres from the canal. It is a natural wine bar with tables down to the water, and it is closed on Sunday and Monday — check the day before you walk over.

Where do you eat at Kongens Nytorv?

Seven places sit within 300 metres of the square, and L'Alsace at Ny Østergade 9 is nearest at 225 metres. Pastis at Adelgade 1 is the only one that describes itself as sitting by Kongens Nytorv, and it opens at eleven all seven days.

Can you eat in the area on a Sunday?

Yes, and better than in the rest of the city: eighteen of the 25 are open on Sunday, and seventeen are open all seven days. The highest rated are the exception — Den Vandrette, Damindra, Ved Stranden 10 and Marv & Ben are all closed on Sunday.

Where can you get breakfast in the area?

Buka at Store Kongensgade 18 is the only place in the guide that opens before ten. There is laminated pastry from seven in the morning, all seven days. The next option is Perchs Tea Room on Kronprinsensgade from ten.

How late can you get food around Nyhavn?

Three places are open until two on Friday and Saturday: Pluto on Borgergade, Ambra and Kinyōbi on Antonigade. On weekdays Pluto and Kinyōbi close at midnight — Kinyōbi at one on Thursday — and Ambra at one.

Are there cheap places near Nyhavn?

Three of the 25 sit at the lowest price level, and none of them is a restaurant: Broens Gadekøkken by the Inderhavn bridge, Gasoline Grill on Landgreven and BOBS on Dronningens Tværgade. More are in cheap eats in Copenhagen.

Distances are straight-line from the middle of the canal and from the middle of Kongens Nytorv, measured from the coordinates on each place, and they are therefore shorter than the walking distance — allow one to two minutes more in practice. The guide covers everything within 600 metres of at least one of the two points; nine places sit further than that from Nyhavn but within 600 metres of the square, and are included for that reason. Addresses and opening hours were checked against the places' own information, most recently in October 2026, and one place is marked as an estimate because the house does not publish its times. The editorial score runs from 1 to 10 and is ours; it sets the order here, not the distance.
