About restaurants in Copenhagen

Looking for a restaurant in Copenhagen is easier once you know the city runs on four tracks: smørrebrød, the Nordic bistros, the French and Italian classics, and the newer places built around small plates to share. They do not cost the same, and they do not open at the same time of day.

Smørrebrød — open sandwiches on dense rye — is the oldest track and the hardest to get a table for. Schønnemann on Hauser Plads has served it since 1877 and lists over a hundred kinds of aquavit; book ahead, midweek included. Aamanns 1921 on Niels Hemmingsens Gade and Palægade in Frederiksstaden do the same in a more expensive room and add a dinner service, while Selma by Nørreport builds on the classics at a mid-range price.

The Nordic bistros are where ambition and price meet. Radio on Julius Thomsens Gade is Claus Meyer's version, organic and priced for a weekday, and No. 2 in Christianshavn serves the same sort of cooking with the harbour outside the window. For French, Le Saint Jacques on Sankt Jakobs Plads has the best pavement tables in the city and Les Trois Cochons on Værnedamsvej a set menu.

The rest is dinner for a group. Pluto on Borgergade, Gorilla in the Meatpacking District and Ambra on Store Kongensgade send out smaller dishes as they are finished and keep the bar going until two at weekends. Bæst on Guldbergsgade makes its own mozzarella and charcuterie — dinner every day from five, plus lunch on Saturday and Sunday from noon. Zeleste by Nyhavn and Pastis by Kongens Nytorv are also open every day of the week.
