Layer cake and a silver coffee pot in the red salon — Conditori La Glace

La Glace is a time machine in the middle of the city centre: dark wood, white linen and waiters who have served the same layer cakes for decades. The patisserie has existed since 1870 and is the oldest of its kind in the country.

The sportskage, with crunching nougatine and whipped cream, is the one everyone comes for, but the Hofkagen and the Othello cake each have their followers. The cakes are sold both whole and by the slice with coffee at the table.

Open from half past eight on weekdays, nine on Saturday and ten on Sunday, closing at six every day. Skoubogade is a couple of minutes from the main shopping street.

It is not cheap and it is not modern, and that is exactly the point. It suits an afternoon with visitors, a birthday, and anyone who wants to taste what Danish cake tradition is. There is usually a queue at weekends — come just after opening.
