Indre By is the part of Copenhagen almost everyone walks through without planning to, which is also why so many people end up eating somewhere at random. That is a waste. The quarter holds the densest concentration of places to eat in the country: 29 of the addresses in our dataset sit inside postcodes 1050 to 1499, and you can walk between most of them in under ten minutes.
This guide is sorted by what you need — lunch, pastry, dinner, wine, night — rather than as a countdown from one to twenty-nine. The reason is practical. In Indre By the choice is almost always settled by the clock, not by the score. At half past eight in the morning, four places are open. At eleven at night, five are. That is what decides the evening.
Each entry gives the address and the opening hours written out. If you would rather see everything on a map with live opening status, the city list is here: all places to eat in Copenhagen.
What Indre By is, and where it ends
Indre By is Copenhagen's medieval town plus everything that grew up inside the old ramparts. The postcodes run from 1050 to 1499, and the quarter contains several smaller districts, each with its own character:
- Strøget and the lanes around Skoubogade, Rådhusstræde and Snaregade. Closest to the tourists, but the side streets go quiet thirty metres off the main flow.
- The Latin Quarter around Sankt Peders Stræde and Krystalgade. University, bakery and the lowest prices in the quarter.
- Store Kongensgade and Frederiksstaden to the north-east. The restaurant street of Indre By — Italian, French and smørrebrød on one stretch.
- Kongens Nytorv and Nyhavn to the east. The most visited corner, but a couple of lanes away there are courtyards the tour buses never find. If you want it measured in metres from the canal or the square, the 25 nearest are in where to eat near Nyhavn and Kongens Nytorv — this guide walks the quarter, that one goes by distance.
- Nørreport and Israels Plads to the north-west. Torvehallerne, and the places that have settled around it.
- The canal and Havnegade to the south. Water, Christiansborg and two of the city's best wine bars.
All of that fits inside a circle a kilometre and a half across. Nowhere else in Denmark packs this many places to eat so close together, and that is the whole argument for spending a day in one quarter instead of riding the metro between three.

Lunch: this is where smørrebrød lives
Five of Denmark's best-known smørrebrød addresses sit within a ten-minute walk of each other in Indre By. No other district in the country comes close, and it is the one category where the quarter is unarguably the city's strongest.
Restaurant Schønnemann, Hauser Plads 16. The cellar has served smørrebrød since 1877, and the list carries more than a hundred kinds of snaps. Open every day from 11.30 to 17 — lunch only, as it always has been. Book a table, midweek included.
Aamanns 1921, Niels Hemmingsens Gade 19-21. Smørrebrød under stone arches, built on produce the house handles itself, with its own snaps alongside. Lunch daily from 11.30 to 17 with last orders at 16, and dinner daily from 18. That makes Aamanns one of the very few places where smørrebrød is also an evening meal — and the only one of the quarter's lunch houses serving both lunch and dinner all seven days.
Palægade, Palægade 8. Classic smørrebrød done properly, with a cake trolley after lunch. Lunch daily from 11.30 to 17, dinner Monday to Saturday from 18 to midnight.
Selma, Rømersgade 20A. The modern one of the five: the smørrebrød builds on the classics instead of repeating them. Monday to Saturday, lunch from 11.30 to 16 and dinner from 18 to midnight. Closed Sunday. A few minutes from Torvehallerne.
Slotskælderen hos Gitte Kik, Fortunstræde 4. A lunch cellar by Christiansborg since 1910. The pickled herring is what you come for, and no fuss is made about it. Every day from 11 to 17.
If you only have room for one of them, the full comparison is in the guide to smørrebrød in Copenhagen.
Morning and pastry: the quarter opens at seven
The earliest door in Indre By is Buka at Store Kongensgade 18 — seven o'clock, all seven days, laminated pastry the whole way. Half an hour later four more open:
Democratic Coffee, Krystalgade 19. A coffee bar inside the main library with the most talked-about almond croissant in the city. Monday to Friday 7.30 to 17, Saturday and Sunday 9 to 16. There is a queue before eleven, so come early — and it is the place for a rainy day, because you can stay in the library afterwards.
Sankt Peders Bageri, Sankt Peders Stræde 29. The oldest bakery in the city, and the Wednesday cinnamon snail is the size of a plate. Monday to Friday 7.30 to 17, Saturday 8 to 16. Closed Sunday. Get there before eleven on a Wednesday.
Atelier September, Kronprinsessegade 62. The avocado on rye that set the tone for a whole generation of Copenhagen breakfast. Weekdays 7.30 to 18, weekends 8 to 17. No reservations — come before ten.
Sonny, Rådhusstræde 5. French-leaning pastry in a side street off Strøget, with a short menu that is properly done. Open all seven days, from 7.30 at the earliest.
For the afternoon there are two classics that look like nothing else in the city. Conditori La Glace at Skoubogade 3 has been making whipped-cream layer cakes since 1870, and the sportskage is still the reason to walk in; the slices are big enough to share. Perchs Tea Room at Kronprinsensgade 5 sits above a tea merchant from 1835 and serves afternoon tea in tiers — book at weekends. Perchs is closed on Sundays; La Glace is not.
The rest of the city's bakeries are on the list of bakeries in Copenhagen.
Dinner: Store Kongensgade is the restaurant street
Four of the quarter's dinner addresses sit on the same stretch of Store Kongensgade, and it is the easiest street in the city to walk down when nothing has been planned.
Ambra, Store Kongensgade 59. House-made pasta under a high ceiling, and a bar that gets used. Daily from 17 until 1 in the morning — Friday and Saturday until 2.
Barabba, Store Kongensgade 34. Pasta, antipasti and a bar at the centre of the room. Wednesday and Thursday from 17.30; Friday to Sunday also lunch from 12 to 14.30. Closed Monday and Tuesday, and that is the trap that catches the most people.
Pluto, Borgergade 16. A lot of smaller plates to share and a long wine list. Daily from 17.30, until 2 at weekends. One of the most used tables in the city when there are more than four of you.
Pastis, Adelgade 1. A French brasserie by Kongens Nytorv with steak frites and oysters, open from 11 every day and until 1 in the morning on Friday and Saturday. The widest opening window of any dinner place here.
Away from Store Kongensgade there are four more:
Marv & Ben, Snaregade 4. Scandinavian cooking, nose-to-tail, in a cellar in the old town. Dinner only, Tuesday to Saturday from 18 to midnight. Closed Sunday and Monday.
Vækst, Sankt Peders Stræde 34. Green Nordic cooking with a greenhouse in the middle of the room. Lunch daily from 12 to 14.15, dinner daily from 17.30, last arrival at 21.
L'Alsace, Ny Østergade 9. Oysters and choucroute in a cobbled courtyard in Pistolstræde. Monday to Saturday from 11.30 to midnight — closed Sunday, which is worth remembering, because the courtyard is the best outdoor table in the quarter.
Zeleste, Store Strandstræde 6. Danish-French and straightforward, in a courtyard a stone's throw from Nyhavn. Daily from 12 to 22, Friday and Saturday until 22.30. It is the answer to "where do you eat near Nyhavn without eating tourist food".
The whole city is on the list of restaurants in Copenhagen, and the best of them are ranked in the guide to restaurants in Copenhagen.
Wine, cocktails and the night
Indre By holds the city's two most talked-about wine bars, three minutes' walk apart by the canal.
Ved Stranden 10 has the deepest list in Copenhagen and a lot of bottles open by the glass, Monday to Friday from 15 to 22 and Saturday from 12 to 22. Closed Sunday. Den Vandrette at Havnegade 53A is a natural wine cellar with tables right down to the water, Tuesday to Saturday from 17 to 23. By Nyhavn, Nebbiolo Winebar at Store Strandstræde 18 is open from 15 to midnight every single day — the only address in the quarter that works for a glass at half past eleven on a Sunday night.
Ruby at Nybrogade 10 is the cocktail bar in a 1740 townhouse across the water from Christiansborg. Open daily, Friday and Saturday until 2. The age limit is 21, which is worth knowing before you arrive with a group.
If the evening is going to continue, there are two addresses. Jazzhus Montmartre at Store Regnegade 19A has been a jazz club since 1959 and plays most evenings at eight, Tuesday to Saturday. Culture Box at Kronprinsessegade 54A is the city's techno institution, two rooms, open Friday and Saturday from ten at night until the following morning. Entry is around 150 kroner and cheaper late.
Fast food, when you just need to eat
Torvehallerne by Israels Plads is the obvious one: two halls with around sixty stalls — fish, cheese, smørrebrød, coffee, tacos. Open daily, Sunday from 11 to 17. Come outside the lunch peak if you want a seat.
Gasoline Grill at Landgreven 10 makes six burgers and nothing else, on organic beef ground in house every day, out of a disused petrol station. Two of the six have no meat. Daily from 11 to 21.30 — but they close when they sell out, and they say themselves that they do. It is also the cheapest meal in this guide.
Kalaset at Vendersgade 16 serves brunch all day, including four in the afternoon when the rest of the city has cleared the tables. Open from 10 daily, until 2 in the morning on Friday and Saturday.
A day in Indre By, hour by hour
07.00 — Buka on Store Kongensgade is the first door in the quarter.
07.30 — Democratic Coffee, Sankt Peders Bageri, Atelier September and Sonny. Four different breakfasts inside one kilometre.
10.00 — Kalaset opens, and Perchs Tea Room starts pouring.
11.00 — Slotskælderen, Gasoline Grill and Pastis. From here you can get hot food all day without a gap.
11.30 — Schønnemann, Aamanns, Palægade, Selma and L'Alsace. The lunch hour in Indre By begins exactly here, and it is the quarter's strongest hour.
15.00 — Ved Stranden 10 and Nebbiolo. The handover from lunch to evening.
17.00 — Ruby, Ambra and Den Vandrette. The evening is running.
17.30 — Pluto, Barabba and the Vækst dinner menu.
18.00 — Marv & Ben, and Palægade and Aamanns switch to their evening menus.
19.00 — Jazzhus Montmartre opens the doors; the concert is at eight.
22.00 — Culture Box, Friday and Saturday.
24.00 — Nebbiolo, L'Alsace, Marv & Ben, Pluto and Barabba close. After that it is Ruby, Ambra, Pastis, Kalaset and Culture Box.
Indre By by what you need
Lunch with visitors: Schønnemann. It is the most Danish meal there is, and the cellar delivers it without making a performance of it. Book.
Lunch without booking: Slotskælderen or Torvehallerne. Both take walk-ins, both open every day.
Breakfast before a meeting: Atelier September or Democratic Coffee. Both open at 7.30, both quick.
Dinner for four to eight: Pluto. The sharing plates are built for it, and there is service until 2 at weekends.
A date: Marv & Ben or Vækst. The cellar or the greenhouse — both are rooms you remember afterwards.
Rain: Democratic Coffee inside the library, or Conditori La Glace. Two indoor rooms where you can sit for hours.
Sunday evening, when nothing is open: Nebbiolo, Zeleste, Pastis, Ambra or Pluto. Five places in the quarter take you after six on a Sunday.
Late, after midnight: Ruby, Ambra and Pastis until one, and until two on Friday and Saturday. After that, Culture Box is all that is left.
With children: Conditori La Glace and Kalaset are the two set up for it.
Sunday and Monday: the days the plan falls apart
Nine of the 29 are closed on Sunday: Ved Stranden 10, Jazzhus Montmartre, Sankt Peders Bageri, Marv & Ben, Den Vandrette, L'Alsace, Selma, Perchs Tea Room and Culture Box. The other twenty are open.
Monday is slightly different. Jazzhus Montmartre, Marv & Ben, Den Vandrette, Culture Box and Barabba are closed — five places, and Barabba is the only one that is open on Sunday and closed on Monday. That catches anyone who planned an Italian Monday on Store Kongensgade.
Nineteen of the 29 are open all seven days. That is an unusually high share by Copenhagen standards, and it follows from the fact that the quarter lives on passing trade rather than regulars.
What it costs
None of the 29 places sits in the most expensive price bracket. Two are in the cheapest — Sankt Peders Bageri and Gasoline Grill — twelve are mid-range, and fifteen are one step above. That is a different distribution from what Indre By's reputation suggests.
To keep the budget down, Sankt Peders Bageri, Gasoline Grill, Torvehallerne, Kalaset and Slotskælderen are the five cheapest meals in the quarter, and all five are open in the middle of the day. There are more in the guide to cheap eats in Copenhagen.
In November and December the quarter's arithmetic changes. Five of the 29 — Schønnemann, Aamanns 1921, Palægade, Selma and Slotskælderen — are lunch cellars with a Christmas menu, and this is where the city's classic julefrokost is held. Prices start at 365 kroner, and the dates close earlier than most people expect. All ten Copenhagen Christmas menus are in julefrokost in Copenhagen.
Practical: getting around
Indre By has metro stations at Kongens Nytorv, Gammel Strand, Marmorkirken and Nørreport, plus Rådhuspladsen on the edge. Nørreport is also the S-train and regional rail hub, and it is where most people arrive.
The distances are short enough that the metro rarely pays off: it is about ten minutes on foot from Torvehallerne to Kongens Nytorv, and about fifteen from Sankt Peders Stræde to Store Kongensgade. A bike is fastest, but the cobbles in the lanes are hard going, and there are very few legal racks around Strøget.
A car is a bad idea. Large parts of the quarter are pedestrianised or one-way, and parking in the red zone is the most expensive in the country.
Questions and answers
What is Indre By in Copenhagen?
Indre By is Copenhagen's historic centre inside the old ramparts, with postcodes from 1050 to 1499. It contains Strøget, the Latin Quarter, Kongens Nytorv, Nyhavn, Nørreport and Christiansborg. Places to eat sit closer together here than anywhere else in our dataset — 29 of Copenhagen's 85 addresses are inside the quarter.
Where is the best place to eat in Indre By?
For lunch: Restaurant Schønnemann at Hauser Plads 16, smørrebrød since 1877. For dinner: Marv & Ben at Snaregade 4 or Ambra at Store Kongensgade 59. For breakfast: Atelier September at Kronprinsessegade 62. If it just needs to be quick, Torvehallerne by Israels Plads is the answer.
Which restaurants in Indre By are open on Sundays?
Twenty of the 29 in this guide. Among the dinner places, Zeleste, Pastis, Ambra, Pluto, Vækst, Barabba and Nebbiolo Winebar are open on Sunday evening. Marv & Ben, L'Alsace and Selma are closed, and those three surprise the most people.
What time do places in Indre By open?
Buka on Store Kongensgade opens at seven every day and is the first in the quarter. Democratic Coffee, Sankt Peders Bageri, Atelier September and Sonny follow at 7.30. Lunch places open between 11 and 11.30, and dinner service begins between 17 and 17.30.
How late is Indre By open?
Ruby, Ambra, Pastis, Kalaset and Pluto run until one, and until two on Friday and Saturday. Culture Box on Kronprinsessegade goes from ten at night until seven or eight the following morning on Friday and Saturday. The rest of the quarter is shut by midnight.
Do you need to book a table in Indre By?
For Schønnemann, Marv & Ben and Perchs Tea Room at weekends: yes. Aamanns, Palægade, Selma, Pluto, Ambra and Vækst are also easier with a reservation on Friday and Saturday. Torvehallerne, Gasoline Grill, Slotskælderen, Kalaset and all the bakeries take walk-ins without fuss.
Is Indre By expensive to eat in?
Less than its reputation. None of the 29 places in this guide sits in the most expensive bracket, and two of them — Sankt Peders Bageri and Gasoline Grill — are among the cheapest meals in Copenhagen. What is expensive in Indre By is the coffee on Strøget, not the restaurants in the side streets.
This guide covers the 29 places in our dataset that fall inside postcodes 1050 to 1499 — Indre By together with the Latin Quarter, Frederiksstaden, Nyhavn, Nørreport and Israels Plads. Within each section the order follows our editorial score. There are no Michelin-starred restaurants here, and each house appears once even when it has several addresses in the quarter. Addresses and opening hours come from the venues' own information and were checked on 26 September 2026. Public holidays and the Christmas weeks change them, especially for the lunch places, which close early.
