Avocado on rye and sunflowers on the marble counter — Atelier September

Atelier September at Kronprinsessegade 62 is small, bright and designed to be photographed, but the food stands up to the attention. Avocado on rye is the classic order, and the eggs with herbs and soured cream are just as good.

The café has four addresses: Kronprinsessegade 62, Århusgade 128 in Nordhavn, Gammel Kongevej 100 on Frederiksberg and Strandvejen 134 in Hellerup. Kronprinsessegade is the original and the only one we cover. The first three keep the same hours; Hellerup closes at 4pm on weekdays.

Open 7.30am to 6pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm at weekends. The kitchen closes at 3pm — after that it is coffee and pastry, not breakfast. No reservations, so come before ten or be patient.

It suits a morning alone with a newspaper and visitors who want to see what the city means by breakfast. The price is high for a piece of rye bread and low for what you get.

Why it's worth a visit

  • Avocado on rye that has become a landmark
