Brunch in Copenhagen has become a discipline where a lot of places do the same thing: avocado, poached egg, sourdough. The difference lies in who bakes the bread, who roasts the coffee, and who decided on a short menu instead of a long one.
This list is ranked on who does it best. The address and opening hours are given under each place. After the list the places are grouped by neighbourhood — the old town and Nyhavn, Nørrebro, Frederiksberg and the harbour — because that is usually how people look when they need somewhere to eat in the morning. At the bottom there are answers to the questions people ask before heading out: when you can come without queueing, what it costs, and where you can sit with children.
To see them all on a map with open-now status, they are here: all brunch places in Copenhagen.

Two numbers are worth taking with you. Only one of the ten opens at seven on a Saturday, and that is Wulff & Konstali on Islands Brygge. On weekdays four open at seven or half past — Orsa Coffee and Wulff & Konstali at seven, Atelier September and Sonny at half past — but at weekends all of them shift an hour later except that one. So if you need to eat before eight on a Saturday, there is exactly one choice.
And Sidecar closes at four six days a week — on Sunday already at half past three. That sounds like a limitation and is really the point of the place: the kitchen makes breakfast and lunch, and then it is over. At the other end, Granola and Kalaset are the two you can use in the evening: Kalaset is open until midnight every day and until two on Saturday, while Granola closes at eleven Monday to Wednesday and at midnight Thursday to Saturday.
1. Lille Bakery, Refshaleøen
Refshalevej 213B. A bakery with a kitchen that cooks vegetable-led lunches and keeps a wine list you would normally have to book a restaurant to find. The bread is why people cycle all the way out.
The bakery has been on the island for more than seven years and buys from small farmers on Zealand. In the morning it is bread and pastry; over midday it becomes small, green dishes with acidity and season. The food is vegetarian most of the time without the place making a point of it.
Open Wednesday to Sunday from eight to five. Monday and Tuesday are closed, which catches out people driving over on a day off. Take a bike or the harbour bus — the journey is part of the visit.
2. Atelier September, city centre
Kronprinsessegade 62. The place that taught Copenhagen to eat avocado on rye, and still does it better than the ones that copied it. Avocado on rye is the classic order, and the eggs with herbs and soured cream are just as good.
There are few tables and no reservations. Come before ten or settle in to wait — and expect it to be full from eleven at the weekend. The coffee is proper, and they sell ceramics and flowers alongside.
Open from half past seven on weekdays and eight at weekends. The kitchen stops at three, the café closes at five or six. There are four addresses in the city now, but Kronprinsessegade is the original.
3. La Banchina, Refshaleøen
Refshalevej 141. Sixteen seats, a swimming jetty and a sauna. Natural wine, small dishes and the water right there.
The kitchen cooks a few things at a time from whatever came in — fish, vegetables, bread — and the card changes by the day. It is as much a place to be as a place to eat: in summer people jump in the water between courses, in winter the sauna is the reason to come.
Open from eight every day, until six — and until eight in the evening Thursday to Saturday. With sixteen seats you either come early or wait with a glass in hand.
4. Sonny, city centre
Rådhusstræde 5. French finesse in a side street off the main shopping street, without any solemnity. Marble tables, good croissants and a menu that does not try to be everything.
Breakfast is simple and well judged — pastry, eggs, yoghurt — and it is one of the few central places where you can sit down without ordering a whole meal. There is takeaway if you are moving on, and much of the card is vegetarian.
Open from half past seven Monday to Friday and nine at weekends. Monday and Sunday they close at four, the rest of the week at six.
5. Mad & Kaffe, Vesterbro
Sønder Boulevard 68. The place that turned brunch into a kit: you tick a form and get three, five or seven small things on one plate.
It solves the problem that nobody can agree on what brunch should contain — vegetarians, meat eaters and the fussy can sit at the same table without negotiating. The formula has since been copied across the country, but Sønder Boulevard is the original.
Open every day from half past eight until eight in the evening, the longest hours on this list. There is a queue at weekends from about ten, and small groups cannot book. Come before nine, or treat it as a late lunch.
6. Sidecar, Nørrebro
Skyttegade 5. Breakfast, lunch and coffee until four. Then it closes, and that is the point: the kitchen does one thing and does it every day.
The menu is short because a choice has been made, and the food comes out quickly. The coffee matches the neighbourhood's coffee bars. The street sits away from the traffic on Nørrebrogade, and there are seats outside when the weather allows.
Open from eight on weekdays and nine at weekends, until four every day — half past three on Sunday. No evening service; the house uses the evenings for events.
7. Granola, Værnedamsvej
Værnedamsvej 5. A 1930s pharmacy interior on the most French street in the city: mahogany, brass and drawers behind the bar.
The card runs from breakfast through lunch to dinner with milkshakes in between, and that is its strength — you can arrive at seven in the morning or ten at night and get something that fits the hour.
Open from seven on weekdays and nine at weekends, closing at midnight Monday to Saturday. On Sunday they close at four. The tables outside are the most sought-after on the street.
8. Orsa Coffee, Vesterbro
Vesterbrogade 46. Lo-fi music, coffee on beans from Prolog and freshly pressed juice. It is one of those places you return to without planning it.
Breakfast is light enough that you can eat and move on, and the counter has pastry actually worth eating. Coffee is the main business and is treated accordingly.
Open from seven on weekdays and eight at weekends, until six every day. There is takeaway, and there is usually a seat — even on a Saturday morning.
9. Kalaset, city centre
Vendersgade 16. Mismatched chairs, patterned wallpaper and old china, as though the furniture came from five different flea markets.
Brunch is the big plate with a little of everything, and it is served all day — including at four in the afternoon, when everyone else has cleared up. That makes Kalaset the answer when you got up too late for everywhere else.
Open from ten every day. Monday to Thursday they close at midnight, Friday and Saturday at two in the morning and Sunday at eleven. There is room for children early in the day and plenty of space for groups later.
10. Wulff & Konstali, Islands Brygge
Isafjordsgade 10. Opens at seven every day, weekends included, and has made breakfast the entire business. You order a number of small dishes and assemble your own plate.
It is a couple of minutes from the harbour bath, which is why there is a queue in summer. There is takeaway if you are heading to the water, and seats outside facing the street.
Open from seven to seven on weekdays and until six at weekends. Come before ten on a Saturday if you want a table without waiting.
Brunch in the old town and around Nyhavn
Three of the ten sit in the old town, and they are as different as you can get within one postcode. Atelier September at Kronprinsessegade 62 is the one others have copied: few tables, no reservations, open from half past seven on weekdays. Sonny at Rådhusstræde 5 sits in a side street off Strøget and opens at the same time, but it is easier to get into and has takeaway if you are moving on. And Kalaset at Vendersgade 16 by Nørreport does not open until ten, and in return serves brunch all day — the answer if you got up too late.
None of them is in Nyhavn. That is worth saying plainly, because "brunch near Nyhavn" is something people search for: there is no address in Nyhavn itself that we would recommend for morning food. If you are walking the quay anyway, Atelier September on Kronprinsessegade is the nearest of the ten, and Zeleste at Store Strandstræde 6 is a stone's throw from Nyhavn — but it does not open until twelve and serves Danish-French lunch and dinner, not brunch. If it has to be food with a view of the quay, Broens Gadekøkken at Strandgade 95 sits on the other side of the Inner Harbour Bridge and opens around lunchtime. The whole area is covered in where to eat near Nyhavn and Kongens Nytorv, with the distance to the canal on every place.
Brunch in Nørrebro
Only one place on the list is in Nørrebro, and that is Sidecar at Skyttegade 5. In return it is one of the cleanest examples of what a good brunch is: breakfast and lunch until four, a short menu, and then they close. The street sits away from the traffic on Nørrebrogade.
That does not mean Nørrebro lacks morning food — the neighbourhood has simply chosen the bakery and the coffee bar over the brunch plate. If you want to eat in Nørrebro without ordering a plate with seven things on it, these open earliest:
- The Coffee Collective, Jægersborggade 10. Open from seven on weekdays and eight at weekends, until seven in the evening. The roastery that set the standard for Danish speciality coffee.
- Darcy's Kaffe, Rantzausgade 2. Open from half past seven on weekdays and nine at weekends. A corner bar with guest roasts from across Europe.
- Collective Bakery, Nørrebrogade 176. Open from seven every day. Pastry and coffee chosen to go together.
- Arrebo, Mimersgade 100. Open from half past seven on weekdays and nine at weekends, until seven in the evening. A small corner café by Superkilen and the cheapest of them.
Further out in Nordvest, Kaffedepartementet at Rentemestervej 64 is open from eight to eight every day, which is the longest opening in that end of the city.
Brunch in Vesterbro
Vesterbro has more of the ten than anywhere except the city centre, and the three sit on separate streets within walking distance of one another.
Mad & Kaffe at Sønder Boulevard 68 is the one people mean when they say Vesterbro and brunch. You tick a slip and get three, five or seven small things on one plate, which solves the problem that nobody can agree on what brunch should contain. Open every day from half past eight until eight in the evening — the longest hours on the list. There is a queue from about ten at weekends.
Orsa Coffee at Vesterbrogade 46 is the opposite: the coffee is the point, and breakfast is light enough that you can eat it and move on. Open from seven on weekdays and eight at weekends, until six every day. It is the one of the three where there is usually a seat — even on a Saturday morning.
Granola at Værnedamsvej 5 sits on the Frederiksberg side of the street and is described in the section below. Open from eight on weekdays.
If you would rather have a bakery than a plate, the neighbourhood's addresses are under bakeries in Copenhagen. If the coffee and not the meal is the errand, the thirteen coffee bars are in best cafés in Copenhagen.
Brunch in Frederiksberg
Værnedamsvej is split down the middle: one side is Vesterbro, the other is Frederiksberg C. That decides the answer here.
Granola at Værnedamsvej 5 is the one of the ten brunch places with a Frederiksberg address — the house gives it as 1819 Frederiksberg C — and so it is the neighbourhood's own. A 1930s pharmacy interior, open from eight Monday to Friday and nine at weekends. It closes at eleven Monday to Wednesday, at midnight Thursday to Saturday and at four on Sunday, and the seats outside are the most sought-after on the street. For comparison, Les Trois Cochons sits across the street at number 10 with postcode 1619 — Copenhagen V.
Hart Bageri at Gammel Kongevej 109, 1850 Frederiksberg C, is the other address on that side of the lakes. It is not a brunch place but a bakery with seats, proper coffee and simple lunch dishes, and the bread is Richard Hart's. Open from half past seven to six on weekdays and from eight to five at weekends. If the morning is to be a pastry and a cup of coffee rather than a plate, it is the best address on that side of the lakes. The rest of the neighbourhood's bakeries are listed under bakeries in Copenhagen.
Brunch by the water
Three of the ten sit by the harbour, and they are the reason this list does not begin in the old town.
Lille Bakery and La Banchina both sit on Refshalevej on Refshaleøen, a few hundred metres apart. Lille Bakery at number 213B is open Wednesday to Sunday from eight to five — closed Monday and Tuesday, which catches people who cycle out there on a day off. La Banchina at number 141 has sixteen seats, a bathing jetty and a sauna, and opens at eight every day. Take the bike or the harbour bus; the trip is part of the visit.
On the other side of the harbour, Wulff & Konstali at Isafjordsgade 10 on Islands Brygge sits a couple of minutes from the harbour bath. It opens at seven all seven days — earliest on the list along with Orsa Coffee, and the only one of the two that does so at the weekend too. There is takeaway if you are heading down to the water.
How early can you eat?
Four of the ten open at seven or half past seven on weekdays: Wulff & Konstali and Orsa Coffee at seven, and Atelier September and Sonny at half past. Granola follows at eight. At weekends most of them shift by an hour, and Wulff & Konstali is the only one still opening at seven on a Saturday.
Kalaset is the opposite pole. It opens at ten and serves brunch until closing, and that is the one to remember if the morning has turned into the afternoon.
Brunch by what you need it for
The order above is ours. This is what you are actually choosing between:
- You need to eat before eight on a Saturday. Wulff & Konstali, Isafjordsgade 10. The only one of the ten that opens at seven at weekends.
- You are a mixed group and someone is vegetarian. Mad & Kaffe, Sønder Boulevard 68. Everyone builds their own plate, so there is no negotiation.
- It is two o'clock and you have not eaten. Kalaset, Vendersgade 16. Brunch is served all day, including in the afternoon.
- You want the bread, not the plate. Lille Bakery, Refshalevej 213B — or Hart Bageri, Gammel Kongevej 109, if you are not going all the way to Refshaleøen.
- You have an hour and then you are moving on. Orsa Coffee, Vesterbrogade 46, or Sonny, Rådhusstræde 5. Both do takeaway and both are central.
- It has to be by the water. La Banchina, Refshalevej 141. Sixteen seats, a bathing jetty and a sauna — come early.
- You are in the old town and do not want to queue. Sonny at Rådhusstræde 5 is easier to get into than Atelier September, and opens at the same time.
- It needs to carry on into the evening. Granola, Værnedamsvej 5 (until midnight Thursday to Saturday), or Kalaset, Vendersgade 16 (until midnight every day). The only two on the list that run that late.
Questions and answers
When is the queue shortest?
Before nine at the weekend, and all morning on a weekday. Most of these places take reservations only for larger parties, so the time is the only thing you control — coming before nine or after two works better than calling. After half past ten on a Saturday there is a wait almost everywhere.
What does brunch cost in Copenhagen?
All ten places on this list sit at price level 2 of four. They cost much the same, in other words, so the choice comes down to mood, opening hours and the queue — not to price. We give levels rather than kroner because menus change, and a figure that is wrong in three months is worse than no figure at all. At Mad & Kaffe you pay by how many items you choose — three, five or seven on one plate.
Where can you get brunch on a weekday?
All ten are open on weekdays except Lille Bakery, which closes Monday and Tuesday. The earliest are Wulff & Konstali and Orsa at seven, and the latest is Kalaset at ten.
Where can you sit with children?
Kalaset has both the room and the patience for it, particularly early in the day, and Wulff & Konstali works because you choose what goes on the plate. Lille Bakery and La Banchina are both on Refshaleøen, where there is space to run around outside.
Is there anything for vegetarians and vegans?
Yes. Lille Bakery, Atelier September, Mad & Kaffe, Sonny and Orsa all keep vegetarian dishes as a fixed part of the card rather than as an add-on. Mad & Kaffe is the easiest if you are a mixed group, because everyone assembles their own plate.
Where can you get brunch in Frederiksberg?
Granola at Værnedamsvej 5. It is the one of the ten with a Frederiksberg address — the house gives it as 1819 Frederiksberg C — and it is open from eight Monday to Friday and nine at weekends. Værnedamsvej is split down the middle, so the neighbours across the road at number 10 are in Copenhagen V. If you would rather have pastry and coffee than a plate, Hart Bageri at Gammel Kongevej 109, 1850 Frederiksberg C, has seats and opens at half past seven on weekdays and eight at weekends.
Where do you get brunch on Islands Brygge?
Wulff & Konstali at Isafjordsgade 10 is the only one of the ten on Islands Brygge — and it is worth knowing beyond the location: it opens at seven all seven days, which nobody else on the list does at the weekend. You choose the number of dishes yourself, there is takeaway, and the harbour bath is a few minutes away. On the other side of the harbour, Lille Bakery and La Banchina sit on Refshaleøen.
Where do you get brunch near Nørreport?
Kalaset at Vendersgade 16 is the closest of the ten and is a few steps from the station. It opens at ten every day and serves brunch all day, afternoons included — the answer if you got up too late. It also has the longest hours on the list: until midnight Monday to Thursday and until two on Friday and Saturday nights.
If you would rather have one of the early places, Sonny on Rådhusstræde is just under a kilometre away and Atelier September on Kronprinsessegade just under one and a half — both a walk of a quarter of an hour or less.
Where do you eat brunch near Nyhavn?
There is no brunch address in Nyhavn itself that we would recommend. Atelier September at Kronprinsessegade 62 is the nearest of the ten, a ten-minute walk away. Zeleste at Store Strandstræde 6 is closer, but it does not open until twelve and serves lunch and dinner, not brunch. If you want food with a view of the quay, Broens Gadekøkken at Strandgade 95 sits on the other side of the Inner Harbour Bridge.
The order follows our editorial score, which weighs the kitchen, the produce and whether the place makes things itself rather than buying them in. Prices and opening hours were checked against each venue's own information in September 2026, but they change — especially at weekends.
