Kødbyen — the name means "the meat city", and in English it is usually called the Meatpacking District — is a working wholesale meat quarter in Vesterbro, where restaurants, bars and a coffee roastery have moved into the halls alongside the businesses that still trade in meat. Nobody lives here, and you can hear it: no neighbours means no reason to close at midnight, which is why Copenhagen's long evenings happen in Kødbyen.
The quarter is small. It is two hundred metres from the roastery on Høkerboderne to the dance floor on Flæsketorvet, and that is the whole point. You can start with coffee at seven in the morning and finish at five the next without leaving the area or ordering a taxi on the way.
Below are the six restaurants and bars in Kødbyen that made this guide, first as a table with the address and the hours, then ranked by our editorial score, with the address and the opening hours written out under each. After that come the three addresses just outside the halls that you end up at if you want wine or a bar without a dance floor, and then the questions visitors ask before they go.
What Kødbyen is, and how to get there
Kødbyen sits behind Halmtorvet, wedged between Sønder Boulevard and the railway land along Ingerslevsgade. It comes in three parts, not two, and they do not even carry the same protection. Den Brune Kødby, the brown meat city, is the older red brick buildings closest to Halmtorvet. Den Hvide Kødby, the white meat city, is the halls behind them: white functionalist architecture, tiled walls, loading ramps onto the street and wide squares in between where lorries parked before tables did. And then there is Den Grå Kødby, the grey one.
The difference is a legal one, and it is worth knowing because it explains why the halls look the way they do. Den Brune and Den Hvide Kødby are listed buildings, designated as one of Denmark's 25 national industrial monuments; the listing covers the buildings inside and out as well as the outdoor areas, and it is administered by the Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces. Den Grå Kødby, by contrast, is only classed as worth preserving, which covers the exterior alone. That is from the City of Copenhagen's own page on the listing — the city owns Kødbyen, and Københavns Ejendomme runs it.
The white part is what people mean when they say Kødbyen, and it is where almost every address in this guide sits — postcodes 1711, 1712 and 1716.
The halls are not a set dressing. Several are cold stores and wholesalers still in operation, the lorries run in the morning, and the quarter smells like a workplace rather than a restaurant. That is part of the deal, and it is why Kødbyen does not look like anywhere else in the city.
You arrive on foot. Dybbølsbro S-train station is a few minutes' walk from the halls, and it is a short walk down from Central Station along Halmtorvet. The Cityringen metro line stops at København H and Enghave Plads and runs all night on Friday and Saturday — worth knowing when you come out at five in the morning and find no taxis waiting on Flæsketorvet.
Restaurants in Kødbyen: all six in one list
If you only need the address and the hours, they are here. The order is our editorial score, and all six sit within two hundred metres of each other.
| Place | Address | Open | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prolog Coffee Bar | Høkerboderne 16 | Weekdays 7-18, weekends 8-18 | Roastery and coffee bar |
| Kødbyens Fiskebar | Flæsketorvet 100 | Daily from 11.30, Fri-Sat until 1 | Fish and oysters |
| Hija de Sanchez | Slagterboderne 8 | Daily from 11, until 21-22 | Tacos at the counter |
| Gorilla | Flæsketorvet 63 | Daily from 17.30, kitchen closes 22 | Sharing plates |
| Mother | Høkerboderne 9-15 | Mon-Thu 11-22, Fri-Sat 11-23, Sun 10-22 | Sourdough pizza |
| Baggen | Flæsketorvet 19 | Thu-Sat, late — not published | Bar and dance floor |
Two things in that table are worth noticing. Only three of the six open before five — Prolog, Mother and Hija de Sanchez, plus Fiskebaren from half past eleven. If you come for lunch, those are what is left. And Baggen is only open three days a week, which is why Kødbyen can feel dead at eleven on a Tuesday night.
1. Prolog Coffee Bar, Høkerboderne 16
A roastery rather than a café that happens to serve coffee. Prolog roasts its own beans and changes the menu with the season: ask for the filter of the day if you want to taste what they are working on, and buy beans to take home if it lands. The bar is small and informal with few seats inside, and in summer customers spill out onto the steps with cold brew. The steps serve as the terrace all summer.
Open from seven on weekdays and eight at weekends, until six every day. That makes Prolog the first address in Kødbyen to open, and the only real reason to be in the quarter before lunch. There is takeaway if you are moving on.
Score 8.8, the highest in Kødbyen — given for the coffee, not the room.
2. Kødbyens Fiskebar, Flæsketorvet 100
The restaurant that turned the quarter into somewhere you go for the food. Fiskebaren occupies one of the white slaughterhouse halls and has built the whole business on fish: oysters, raw fish, fish soup and the catch of the day. The tiles and the long bar counter make a room that is loud in the right way.
Oysters are the signature, and they are cheapest early in the evening. If there are two of you, sit at the bar rather than at a table — shorter wait, a view of the kitchen, and you can order a little at a time instead of committing up front. There are tables outside on the square in summer, when the quarter fills up from late afternoon.
Open from half past eleven until midnight Monday to Thursday and Sunday, and until one on Friday and Saturday. Along with Gorilla it is the most expensive place on this list. Book at weekends, or come before seven. Score 8.5.
3. Hija de Sanchez, Slagterboderne 8
The difference is in the tortilla. The corn is nixtamalised and milled in house, the way it is done in Mexico, which is why a taco from here tastes unlike a taco from a pizzeria. The stall was started by a former pastry chef from Noma and opened in Kødbyen in 2016.
The menu is short: a handful of tacos and some sides. You order at the counter and eat standing up or at the tables outside, and three tacos is a meal for most people. It is cheap and it is quick — but there is a queue at weekends.
Open every day from eleven until nine, and until ten on Friday and Saturday. Good for a fast lunch, an early evening in the quarter, or something to eat before you move on to a bar. Score 8.5.
4. Gorilla, Flæsketorvet 63
Gorilla serves a lot of small plates that arrive as the kitchen is ready for them. The room is big and high-ceilinged in one of the old halls, the music is loud, and there is a DJ later in the week. The bar keeps going after the kitchen closes, which is one reason a dinner here turns into an evening without anyone having to move.
This is not a quiet dinner for two. It is birthdays, work dinners and the kind of table where noise is fine. If you want to talk, book early: after nine the hall fills and the volume follows. Tables outside on Flæsketorvet in summer.
Open from five every day. Sunday to Wednesday it closes at midnight, Thursday at one, Friday and Saturday at two in the morning. Score 8.4.
5. Mother, Høkerboderne 9-15
Sourdough pizza from a wood-fired oven, served at long tables in an old butcher's stall. The dough is sour and thin and the pizzas are simple — the Neapolitan school, not the American one. You sit close together, and tables get shared when it is busy.
Mother is the one place in Kødbyen where bringing children to dinner makes sense: the long tables, the short wait and food nobody argues about solve what the rest of the quarter does not. Tables outside on the square in summer, and a queue from seven on Friday and Saturday.
Open from eleven in the morning until one at night Monday to Saturday, and until eleven on Sunday. That makes it both the earliest kitchen in the quarter and one of the last ones still going. Moderately priced. Score 8.3.
6. Baggen, Flæsketorvet 19
Where evenings in Kødbyen end. The bar was called Bakken, and it is called Baggen now — bakkenkbh.dk forwards to baggenkbh.dk, and the new site carries the same address, Flæsketorvet 19. If you are looking for Bakken in Kødbyen, this is the one.
It is a bar with a dance floor rather than a club: DJs behind the decks, a big white tiled room, and a crowd that has just eaten nearby. No dress code, and no queue at the bar early on — that changes at midnight.
The opening hours are the weak point: the house does not publish them on its new site. Expect Thursday to Saturday and late, but check their Instagram before you go. Come before eleven if you want a table. Score 7.9.
Restaurants in Kødbyen: how to choose
If the evening is about the food, Kødbyens Fiskebar is the choice — it is the only place in the quarter where the kitchen is the actual reason to come. If it is about the company, Gorilla is built for that. If there are a lot of you, or children, Mother is the one nobody complains about. If it needs to be fast, Hija de Sanchez runs from eleven until nine.

Bars and coffee bars in Kødbyen: what sits inside the halls
This is the thing people most often come looking for, and the short version is that Kødbyen has exactly one coffee bar and one bar inside the halls themselves. Everything else is a five to twenty minute walk away. The table covers both, so you can see when you have to leave the quarter.
| Place | What it is | Where | Open |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prolog Coffee Bar | coffee bar and roastery | in the halls, Høkerboderne 16 | weekdays 7-6, weekends 8-6 |
| Baggen | bar with a dance floor | in the halls, Flæsketorvet 19 | Thu-Sat, late — hours not published |
| Mother | pizzeria with a bar | in the halls, Høkerboderne 9-15 | 11-10, Fri-Sat to 11, Sun from 10 |
| Kihoskh | beer kiosk | 5 min, Sønder Boulevard 53 | 7am-1am, Fri-Sat to 2am |
| Je t'aime | wine bar and bistro | 5 min, Dybbølsgade 9 | weekdays 8-midnight, weekends 12-midnight |
| Bar Una | cocktail bar | 10 min, Oehlenschlægersgade 53A | Wed-Thu 5pm-1am, Fri-Sat 5pm-4am |
| Ramblin' Bar | neighbourhood bar | 10 min, Ingerslevsgade 200 | Wed-Thu 2pm-midnight, Fri-Sat 2pm-2am |
| Curfew | speakeasy | 20 min, Stenosgade 1 | Tue-Sun, closed Monday |
The coffee bar is Prolog, and there is no other inside the quarter. It opens at seven on weekdays and eight at weekends — the figures are on prologcoffee.com, which lists two sets of hours, one for Vesterbro and one for Østerbro. These are the Vesterbro ones, that is Høkerboderne 16. That makes Prolog the first address in Kødbyen to get going in the morning, and the only one before eight. If you would rather sit down, Orsa Coffee at Vesterbrogade 46 brews the same beans.
The bar inside the halls is Baggen, the one that used to be Bakken. Apart from it, Mother is the only place in the quarter where you can get a glass without ordering food, and it closes at ten or eleven. If the evening is to continue after that, you have to leave Kødbyen — and Bar Una is the only one nearby open past two.
Wine and a beer outside the halls
There is no proper wine bar inside Kødbyen. For a glass before or after dinner you walk a couple of streets out of the quarter.
Je t'aime, Dybbølsgade 9, sits directly behind Kødbyen and is French all the way through: croissant and coffee in the morning, charcuterie and a glass in the afternoon, proper food in the evening. The wine list is French and weighted towards what you can get by the glass, and there are pavement tables. Open from eight until midnight on weekdays and from twelve at weekends. Evenings fill up, Friday especially.
Kihoskh, Sønder Boulevard 53, is a corner shop that has taken beer seriously since long before it was fashionable. The fridges hold speciality beer from all over, you buy it over the counter and drink it where you like — in summer half of Vesterbro sits on the kerb outside. Open from seven in the morning until one at night Sunday to Thursday and until two on Friday and Saturday, and the kitchen makes its own pork sandwich, rye sandwich and a soup of the day in winter. Kihoskh Bar is a different address from the shop: it sits opposite at Sdr. Boulevard 52, with its own door and its own concerts.
Bar Una, Oehlenschlægersgade 53A, is a few minutes from both Kødbyen and Værnedamsvej and makes cocktails in a small dark room where the bartender asks what you like instead of handing you a list. Open Wednesday and Thursday from five until one, and Friday and Saturday from five until four in the morning. Closed Sunday to Tuesday.

The neighbourhood: five minutes from the halls
Kødbyen is small, which is an advantage, but it also means the quarter has gaps. If there is no table, if it is too early in the day, or if it simply has to be something else, this is what sits within a quarter of an hour's walk.
Mad & Kaffe, Sønder Boulevard 68, is brunch as a plate you assemble yourself — three, five or seven items. Open every day from half past eight in the morning until eight at night, which makes it the nearest address that works all day. It is also the answer to what you do in Kødbyen on a weekend morning, when only Prolog and Mother are running.
Orsa Coffee, Vesterbrogade 46, opens at seven on weekdays and eight at weekends and closes at six. Lo-fi music, Prolog coffee and fresh juice — the same beans as in Kødbyen, but with a room to sit in.
Delphine, Vesterbrogade 40, is a Mediterranean bistro with small plates to share in the evening. Open from half past five every day, and from five until half past midnight on Friday and Saturday. It is the closest thing to a proper dinner without leaving Vesterbro — and the opposite of Kødbyen's noise level.
Ramblin' Bar, Ingerslevsgade 200, sits on the other side of the rail yard and opens at two in the afternoon, Wednesday to Saturday. It is a plain bar with no doorman, and it is open long before anything in Kødbyen is — until two in the morning on Friday and Saturday.
Curfew, Stenosgade 1, is a speakeasy with hand-cranked shakers and a list of vintage spirits, and with a score of 8.9 it is the best-rated place in this whole section. Open Tuesday and Wednesday from six until one, Thursday until two, Friday and Saturday from five until two, and Sunday from seven until one. Closed Monday. It is a twenty-minute walk from Flæsketorvet and an entirely different kind of evening from Baggen.
Brød, Enghave Plads 7, is Kihoskh's little brother and bakes with the same attitude the kiosk picks its beer by. The hours are an estimate — expect late morning to late afternoon.
A day in Kødbyen, hour by hour
The quarter changes character four times in twenty-four hours, and it is easier to plan around if you know when.
- 07-11: coffee only. Prolog opens at seven on weekdays and nine at weekends. There is no breakfast in the halls beyond what sits on Prolog's counter, and the lorries are still running. If you need to eat, Mad & Kaffe is five minutes away on Sønder Boulevard.
- 11-17: lunch and empty squares. Mother and Hija de Sanchez open at eleven, Kødbyens Fiskebar at half past. This is the quietest and cheapest time to be in Kødbyen, it is when there is a table without a reservation, and oysters at Fiskebaren are cheapest early.
- 17-21: the quarter fills up. Gorilla opens at half past five. From around seven Fiskebaren and Gorilla fill, and at weekends Mother too. This is the part you need to have booked.
- 21-05: the evening runs long. Gorilla stays open until two on Friday and Saturday, but its kitchen closes at ten. Mother serves until one six days a week, Fiskebaren until one at weekends. Baggen is open Thursday to Saturday and closes late, but the house does not publish its hours, so check their Instagram. Sunday to Wednesday the quarter is empty after midnight.
Kødbyen by what you need it for
- A first date: Kødbyens Fiskebar early, while there is still light and you can hear each other. Then Curfew in Stenosgade if it is going well.
- Eight colleagues: Gorilla. The food is built to be shared, and there is room for nobody to lower their voice.
- With children: Mother, and before seven. Long tables, a short wait, and the only address in the halls marked child-friendly.
- A quick lunch: Hija de Sanchez. You order at the counter, the corn is ground on site, and there is no reservation to think about.
- After work without eating: Kihoskh on Sønder Boulevard, open until one. You buy over the counter and sit on the kerb, and it costs less than anything else in the quarter.
- The evening has to end late: Baggen, if it is Thursday to Saturday. If it is a Tuesday you have to leave Kødbyen — Bar Una is closed Sunday to Tuesday, which leaves Curfew as the nearest option.
Late at night
Kødbyen is one of the few parts of Copenhagen where the late half of the evening does not require moving. Gorilla runs until two on Friday and Saturday — though its kitchen closes at ten, so the food has to be ordered before that — Mother serves until one six days a week, and Baggen takes over Thursday to Saturday and closes late — though they no longer publish the hour.
The order that works: eat before nine, a glass somewhere in between, and the dance floor after eleven if you want to sit down first. Come Sunday to Wednesday and Baggen is shut, in which case the quarter is done by midnight. See all nightlife in Copenhagen →
That sequence is why the Meatpacking District gets booked for Christmas lunches. Gorilla has the most expensive Christmas menu in the city — Gorilla All Night at 1,795 kroner with an open bar from 9pm to 12.30am — and Mother and Baggen are a hundred metres away, so the party never needs a taxi. The whole field, with prices and dates, is in julefrokost in Copenhagen.
Practical notes
- When it fills up. Friday and Saturday from around nine. Fiskebaren and Gorilla fill from seven, Mother from seven at weekends, and Baggen from midnight.
- When to book. Fiskebaren and Gorilla at weekends, and Gorilla early in the evening too if you want to be able to talk. Prolog, Hija de Sanchez, Mother and Baggen you take as they come.
- It is still a working meat district. Several of the halls are businesses in operation. The lorries run in the morning, and the squares are a workplace before they are a terrace.
- In summer the tables are outside. Fiskebaren, Gorilla, Mother and Hija de Sanchez all serve outdoors, and the squares carry the quarter from May to September.
- Taxis are scarce late. Plan on walking to Dybbølsbro or Central Station when Baggen closes.
Questions and answers
What is Kødbyen?
Kødbyen is a wholesale meat district in Vesterbro, Copenhagen, still used by the meat trade but now shared with restaurants, bars and a coffee roastery that have moved into the halls. It splits into three parts: Den Brune Kødby, the older brick buildings facing Halmtorvet; Den Hvide Kødby, the white functionalist halls behind them; and Den Grå Kødby. The first two are listed buildings and together form one of Denmark's 25 national industrial monuments, while Den Grå Kødby is only classed as worth preserving, which covers the exteriors alone. English speakers usually call the whole thing the Meatpacking District.
How do you get to Kødbyen?
On foot, from Halmtorvet or Sønder Boulevard. Dybbølsbro S-train station is a few minutes' walk from the halls, and it is a short walk down from Central Station. The Cityringen metro stops at København H and Enghave Plads and runs through the night on Friday and Saturday. The quarter is small enough to cross in five minutes.
What are the opening hours in Kødbyen?
They vary more than you would expect. Prolog Coffee Bar opens at seven on weekdays and closes at six. Mother and Hija de Sanchez open at eleven. Kødbyens Fiskebar opens at half past eleven, Gorilla not until half past five in the afternoon. The last to close is Baggen, and only Thursday, Friday and Saturday — but they do not publish the hour themselves, so do not count on it. Sunday to Wednesday the quarter is empty after midnight.
How expensive is Kødbyen?
Wider than the reputation suggests. Hija de Sanchez and Mother sit at the moderate end, Prolog is a coffee bar, and Kødbyens Fiskebar and Gorilla are the two most expensive — both on a par with an ordinary Copenhagen restaurant dinner. Oysters at Fiskebaren are cheapest early in the evening. Prices are on the venues' own pages and we do not repeat them here, because they change.
Can you bring children to Kødbyen?
To Mother, yes. The long tables, the sourdough pizza and the short wait make it the one place in the quarter set up for it, and it is tagged as child-friendly in this guide. Hija de Sanchez also works early in the day, because you order at the counter and can sit outside. After nine in the evening Kødbyen is not a place for children.
Do you need to book a table in Kødbyen?
At weekends, yes, and above all at Kødbyens Fiskebar and Gorilla. If you would rather not, come before seven — that is the hour when the quarter turns from empty to full. Hija de Sanchez and Prolog take no reservations; you queue instead.
Which restaurants are there in Kødbyen?
Six places in the halls are in this guide: Kødbyens Fiskebar at Flæsketorvet 100 (fish and oysters), Gorilla at Flæsketorvet 63 (sharing plates), Mother at Høkerboderne 9-15 (sourdough pizza), Hija de Sanchez at Slagterboderne 8 (tacos), Prolog Coffee Bar at Høkerboderne 16 (coffee roastery) and Baggen at Flæsketorvet 19 (bar and dance floor). Fiskebaren is the one where the kitchen is the reason to come; Mother is the only one open from eleven every day. When the restaurants close, Baggen takes over Thursday to Saturday — the rest of the week you leave the quarter. Baggen used to be called Bakken and sits at the same address.
Which bars are there in Kødbyen?
One inside the halls themselves: Baggen at Flæsketorvet 19, which was called Bakken until recently. Apart from that you can get a glass at Mother in Høkerboderne without ordering food, but it closes at ten or eleven. There is no wine bar in the quarter. If the evening is to continue, you leave Kødbyen: Kihoskh on Sønder Boulevard and Je t'aime in Dybbølsgade are five minutes away, Bar Una and Ramblin' Bar ten. Kihoskh sells over the counter until one, and until two on Friday and Saturday, and Kihoskh Bar is a separate address opposite the shop at Sdr. Boulevard 52. Bar Una is the only one nearby open past two.
Is there a coffee bar in Kødbyen?
Yes, one: Prolog Coffee Bar at Høkerboderne 16, which is both a roastery and a bar. It opens at seven on weekdays and eight at weekends and closes at six every day, which makes it the first address in Kødbyen to get going in the morning — and the only one before eight. There are few seats inside; in summer the steps serve as the terrace. If you would rather sit down, Orsa Coffee at Vesterbrogade 46 is five minutes away and brews the same beans.
The ranking follows our editorial score, which weighs the kitchen, the
ingredients, and whether the place makes something itself rather than buying it
in. This guide covers the places in Kødbyen we would send someone to; the
businesses in the halls that only sell wholesale are not included. Addresses and
opening hours were checked against the venues' own information, most recently on
27 September 2026, and that round produced two corrections: Prolog opens at
eight at weekends, not nine — prologcoffee.com lists two sets of hours, and
these are the Vesterbro ones — and Bakken is now called Baggen, with
bakkenkbh.dk forwarding to baggenkbh.dk at the same address. Baggen's new site
publishes no opening hours at all, so their times are now an estimate rather
than a measurement. Kihoskh stood in the same place until 28 September, and
that was our mistake: kihoskh.dk is a Shopify store whose front page says
nothing, but the subpage /pages/kihoskhbutik publishes Sunday to Thursday
07-01 and Friday and Saturday 07-02. The hours here now follow those. Times change more
often here than elsewhere in the city — call ahead if you are travelling a long
way.
